La Moille, Oct. 31st 1856.
Dear Friend Kennicott -
Yours of 23rd inst.
came to hand this evening. - I
had sent you a couple of
hurried scrawls for the "Farmer"
in the morning. It pains
me that my time is so fully
occupied that I am unable to
write any but business letters.
This comes from being entirely
disappointed in promised funds
from my quondam partner -
(having enlarge business in anticipa=
=tion thereof) and tardy collections
from last spring's customers.
My partner was Sumner
Rhoades, lately advertised (Rhoades
& Ray) in Horticulturist. - he has
since bought Mr. Ray's interest
in the Lyons Nursery.
Do not think from the
above that we are destitute[underlined]; but it
keeps me busy[underlined] to meet my engagements.
