Dear Sir;

Yours of the 20 [nth?] came duly to hand. But importantly without the resolutions referred to therein. I would be exceedingly gratified to meet your People & their Representatives as proposed in your letter; and have not concluded to say that I cannot attend. But inasmuch as our College Session for the Winter Term commences on the 3d of [hole in paper] I must be detained here for some 2 weeks thereafter for the purpose of perfecting the organization of the Session. But, if it should be deemed that I could be of any essential service to your most worthy enterprise, by being in Springfield at any time, say after the 20 of January, I think I could so adjust affairs as to join you in such

demonstration as you & your friends may determine upon as the most expedient & judicious.

But, I presume, in all probability, that you would desire an earlier[underlined] demonstration, than that; & that, therefore, the time mentioned would not be consistent with your wishes & arrangements. And, under this presumption, I would not expect to visit Springfield, unless you should write me again upon the subject. Earlier than that it would be impossible for [me?] to go, for the reasons before assigned.

In case you should write me again upon this point, I will thank you to forward the resolutions alluded to; in order that, by comprehending fully your plan & modus[underlined] of procedure, I may not, by any misinterpretation of your [biens?], cause any

collision of sentiment tending to embarrass your action in its principles, or details.

This Institution is in a most properous condition - crowded with students, & more coming, & we are extending accommodations accordingly.

I presume our catalogue will show an attendance of more than 400 students.
