Dear Sir;

Yours of the 20 [nth?] came duly to hand. But importantly without the resolutions referred to therein. I would be exceedingly gratified to meet your People & their Representatives as proposed in your letter; and have not concluded to say that I cannot attend. But inasmuch as our College Session for the Winter Term commences on the 3d of [hole in paper] I must be detained here for some 2 weeks thereafter for the purpose of perfecting the organization of the Session. But, if it should be deemed that I could be of any essential service to your most worthy enterprise, by being in Springfield at any time, say after the 20 of January, I think I could so adjust affairs as to join you in such

And, under this presumption, I would not expect to visit Springfield, unless you should write me again upon the subject.
