Text of Petition: 21-1-1803-1 To the Honorable the Senators and Representatives of the State of Tennessee in General Assembly Met; The Petition of William King an inhabitant of Washington County Virginia Humbly Showeth, That your petitioner having at great Risque and Vast expence constructed extensive Salt works within one mile of the North fork of Holstein River whereby he is enabled to make a considerable quantity of Salt over the Present Demand & that if Sale of the whole could be annually effected it would justify its being sold on lower terms than it now could without embarrassment to the manufactures or manufacturers And as this desirable period would sooner arrive was the River of your State Rendered accessible by water from the Salt Works, and more easy of Passage: Particularly, if the North fork of Holstein was made navigable by erecting a Lock at the Dam of of David Ross esqe. on said River (near its junction with main Holstein) and declaring the residue of Said River which is with-in your State a High way; This when done would enable transportation of Salt; to supply all parts of your State con venient to the Rivers Holstein, Tennessee &c. in a Short time on lower terms than can now or at any future day be afford-ed from the Holstein Salt Works without a free Na-vigation of the North fork of Holstein River.
Your petitioner therefore prays that your honorable Body may enact a law for preventing any further ob obstructions by Dams or otherwise on the North fork of Holstein in the State of Tennessee also that the propri- etors of the present Dam should as speedily as your honors may think Proper erect or cause to be erected a good and safe lock on said Dam sufficient to admit the passage of loaded Boats from ten to thirty Tons Burthen say 75, or 80 by 15 feet with a free Passage to Boats at all times through said lock and in case of omission in erecting the said lock in such time as your honors

To the Honorable the General assembly of the State of Tennessee, The Petition of a Number of the Citizens of Montgomery County Humbly showeth that whereas at {} last General Assembly a law was passed, making, or keeping open the navi=gation of the West fork of red river within our said County of Montgomery, which law we conceive Contrary to our interest & to the interest of the Public =k at large because the stream will not admit of Navigation at any time but in a flood & the advantage of Mills would so far surpass that of Navigation. We pray that your Honours would repeal the law as several merchant Mills may be build on said stream which will tend much to publick good.

Text of Petition: 23-1-1803-1 To the speakers and members of both houses of the General Assembly-
The Petition of sundry of the inhabitants of Davidson County
Your petitioners, beg leave to State, altho there is a law, which rests it in the power of the several county courts, to grant roads, & ferrys, in such cases, that are deemed of public utility - Yet the intention, of said law, is often defeated by certain combinations, which admit of an appeal to the superior Court - They beg leave to cite as an instance thereof- That Mathew Brooks obtained an order of Court which was sanctioned, by a majority of said court consis =ting of twenty nine majistraes - But the ???? who had opposed it, had cajoled the court in to an appeal to the superior court, whereby it was submitted, to two of the Judges, whether the will of the County should be gratified, who were well acquainted with the circumstances - The result was that the said Brooks, and an immense majority of your petitioners, are defeated in the purpose of having said ferry established - Wherefore they pray an Act of your honourable assembly to enable & authorize the said Brooks to open and establish a ferry at ^or near the upper end of Waynesborough, on Cumberland river -

Text of Petition (drag lower right corner to enlarge box): A want of opportunity; We as men speaking for ourselves and in conjunction with your wish that a system may be laid by which we may receive the benefits of and fellow citizens as Jurymen, a sufficient number of which might be pointed but whose candor abilities and information might be reflected to perform with dispatch such business as would come before them them in this case have a different allowance made them for this time and [supposes?] One thing may we mention and leave it to the consideration and decision of you in whom we have confided. On some show [Hall's?] men who are deemed suitable through and each county are nominated and on record as Jurymen; previous to the commencement of Court the names each are placed together and a suitable number drawn by way of ballat, those drawn are abridged to attend Court and receive a [illegible] this time and those men are also called upon as [illegible] at [illegible] August. The particular request of your petitioner's is that an allowance may be made of Jurymen, and such Jurymen appointed as shall he wast thy of so his portent a business. Purpose / Short Description: exhausted their funds in inventing and bringing into use the saw gin - That notwithstanding the [insuperable] misrepresentations and prejudices which have gone forth respecting thy business they have firm reliance on the laws of their country, and feel a concise rectified in the justice of these courts. When we look round and see many of our fellow citizens engaged in pursuits exclusively for their own benefit awarded and protected in those pursuits by the laws of the Country, I cannot believe that those who have contributed in any degree to benefit their fellow citizens and the public will be deprived of the protection of the law, and that their property shall be taken from them without an adequate consideration.

The inconvenience is, it is a narrow and mountanous pair but few inhabitants yet appears from some partially or other to withhold justice from the other apart of the County as they have unjustly drawn our publick buildings much above the [cluster?] that way the distance from the Courthouse westward to Anderson County line is about thirty six miles. The distance from he Courthouse south to the Grainger line about five or six miles. And the distance from the Courthouse North to the Indian lands from twelve to fourteen miles and much farther to the state line which is the present county line. We verily believe this statement of facts correct; in addition to which the west end of the county is much wider than the east end and vastly superior in number. Therefore pray your honours by your delegated authority two remedy our districts by directing our publick buildings to be completely in the center of the county or as convenient as possible to the majority. Text of Petition (drag lower right corner to enlarge box): To the honorable the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee The prayer of your petitioners humbly sheath That the laws now in force against gambling so far as they affect horse running are in our opinions opposed to the interest of the people of the State, as they discourage racing of good horses the article most advantageous for us to carry to market, and w do believe the attention of people throughout the State to the nurture of well beloved horses to have degenerated ever since laws have been passed against horse racing your petitioners further state that since the abolition of legal horse racing numbers of men have gambled away their property and often would take refuge under the present laws, brought suits against the {illegible} and recovered both in lieu of sd properties your petitioners further state that we deem it on enjoyment of our natural privileges without any benefits derived thereupon to the community and think all such laws offensive and unnecessary but your petitioners for the above and innumerable other reasons hope & Believe that your honorable body are attentive to laws heretofore passed against [illegible] and make after the same in future & your Petitioners will ever pray &c

Your petitioners beg leave to make known to your honorable body that Willis Jones, who was appointed the last session of the General Assembly to run the divisional lines Petitioner Smith Wilson and Jackson Counties and only being allowed one marker, and the lines of the said Counties being for the most part of the way running an [-lided] Country the said Willis Jones was compell ed through [illegible] to accomplish numbers. The said lines to be at greater expand than the legislative contemplated at that lines we therefore pray that your honorable body will by a law enable the county court of Smith to recon[cede?] the said Jones the expense that he incurred
