The whole thing is a wonderful
surprise to me, & I look upon the

as owing mainly to you & Dr. Jackson,
to whom I beg that you will convey
our sincerest thanks. In saying
this I do no depreciate the kind
efforts of Howitt, Spencer, & others,
but I am sure that I am not

expressed. Two minor surprises
are connected with the signatures.
Of these, one is Chamberlain's
refusal, & the other is Lord
Stanmore
's consent. With the latter
gentleman, when I was in Fiji I
had a big fight, & I beat him. It
was not a personal matter with
me, but my official position made
