Fiji, le 188

I know of about ['11' crossed out]
cases of twins. In one
case when a boy & a girl
were born to a woman the father
killed the boy & saved the girl
to save the trouble of bringing them
up for they are very lazy. It
caused however a great disturbance
in the camps among their friends
who thought thy ought to have
brought them up -

(* This seems important
1. showing that twins are not destroyed
in all tribes
2. Re female infanticide)

p. 18. The men have several
wives, sometimes as many as
8 or 9 x x They steal them
from one another, & frequently
