Dear David: Here I am once more agitating about the Stieglitz Collect ion! The Nashville Magazine gave me the go-ahead to do a story on it for the October issue; and I thought it a fine time to let Nashvillians know once more that it existed. I went to see Dr. Leonard, and felt very encouraged about his interest in it, as the Werthans and Helen Vanderbilt had told me, he seemed appreciative, and told me that all systems were go for it to be put back in place and cared for again, as soon as all the works are returned, and the building is refurbished. But after that, I began to get together some illustra¬ tions for the story, and found that he had no photo¬ graphs in hand, could not let me in with a photog¬ rapher to take any, and Earl Hooks was called and seemed unsure that anything was there--so, I am writing you primarily to find out what could be had, in black and white to illustrate the story. I was anxious to use a photograph of Stieglitz himself, his self-portrait in the gallery, or the painting of him by Stettheimer, and the "Steerage” photo. I wanted very much to have his photograph of Miss O’Keeffe, which is in the collection, and pictures of her paintings. If you can be of any help here, please let me know. I hope that your work is rewarding there. I have enjoyed reading about you in Washington and New York papers, which my friends there clip for me.
Best wishes, Louise
WNGE has agreed to let us have some of the unsold reproductions, "Spririt of America" -I am told by Bobby Blum - learned you like some if this is true?

Dear David: Ed Shein and I were talking this morning regarding the loan of several Bannister’s for the RIC/Black Heritage Society Exhibit "Four from Providence" and he indicated that you would be in town on October 8.
I am presently developing an activities program for the exhibition period. If it is possible, I would very much like you to be part of the pro¬ gram. Would you consider giving a gallery 'walk through' on Sunday afternoon October 8 at 2 o’clock.
We are able to extend a $150 honorarium for your contribution. I will need to know as soon as possible if you will be able to participate so you can be included in program announcements and catalog notes.
The exhibit encompasses the lives/works of Bannister, Prophet, Alston, and Jennings with a good deal of new material emerging. Hope you have a great summer on the main coast. Look forward to seeing you at your Newport opening.
Sincerely,
Lawrence F. Sykes Professor

NATIONAL WASHINGTON ENDOWMENT D.C. 20506 FOR THE ARTS A Federal agency advised by the National Council on the Arts
August 29,1978
TO: Museum Advisory Panel Members, Past and Present
FROM: David Ryan, Assistant Director, Museum Program
At its last meeting, The Museum Advisory Panel noted with admiration John Spencer's distinguished contributions to the museum profession while serving as Program Director for the past six years.
As a special tribute to John, the Advisory Panel recommended asking all Panel members, past and present, to send a selection of their exhibition catalogues and handbooks published under the auspices of the Arts Endowment to the Duke University Art Library. Rather than duplicate titles possibly obtained by the Library already, it was suggested that the publications be new ones, that they represent what you regard as your most estimable effort in publishing, and that they be of interest to the Art Library.
The University will insert a bookplate in each publication reading: "In honor of John Spencer for his distinguished contribution to the arts in America during his service as Director of the Museum Program, National Endowment for the Arts, 1972 - 1978."
All publications should be mailed directly to:
Gifts & Exchanges Duke University Library Durham, North Carolina 27706
Please insert a card in each publication noting that it is a contribution to the John Spencer honorary gift program.

If possible, I would appreciate having a list of the publications you send so that we can compile a complete listing for distribution to all Panel members.
I hope you will join us in recognition of John's many accom¬ plishments while at the Endowment. I know he will be pleased and I am certain the Library will welcome the addition of fine publications. If you have any questions, please let me know.
Many thanks.
David Ryan

Dear Ms. Blackman;
Thank you for your interest in our Amistad II Catalogue. We do not give blanket permission for reproduction of material in the catalogue. However, if you have specific requests for specific material, we will be glad to consider your request.
We try to balance very legitgate and worthwhile educational needs by institutions such as your's with our concern that the rights of artists to have control over the use pit to their works be respected. If we can help you in any specific way, please let us know.
Sincerely,
James Buell JB/ag bcc: David Driskell per letter
