Memebers of the Board of Governors:
In seeking candidates for the post of Academic Director, the Search Committee is asking each Governor and selected past faculty members to make a recommendation of the one person they feel can most appropriately permanently fill this job with the reasons for your choice.
Remember, it is full time in the summer and an average of 2-3 days in the winter as now structured.
Among the possibilities, it was suggested that we consider persons now working as artists, writers, critics, gallery staff and arts administrators.
If they are currently living in the New York area, it would probably be a plus given the difficulty of finding new housing here.
The Committee asks that you make this suggestion confidentially to us and not approach the person you are suggesting at this early date.
Your reply to this request for your prime selection will be appreciated by February, so that the names submitted can be considered by the Committee individuals before our meeting next month.
Sincerely,
J.F. [signature] Janet Fish Chairperson

[image alt text: triptych of diffrent images.]
In cooperation with the National Center of Afro-American Artists and Dr. Lois Jones Pierre-Noel, we are proud to introduce this exciting new series. 78 color slides covering 70 artists including works by: Edmonia Lewis, Augusta Savage, Lois Mailou Jones, Elizabeth Catlett and Betye Saar. The works offered here are a rich sampling of Third World Women Artists. Dr. Joned, former pro fessor of design at Howard Univeristy compiled this collection as a "celebration of women artists themselves." and as an introduction to a vast but neglected field of art. It is an area which deserves far greater recognition. Do not miss this opportunity to add a very important set to your collection!

1981 Whitney Biennial Film Exhibition This selection of new films by American artists had its most recent screening at the International Museum of Photography at George Eastman House.
1983 Whitney Biennial Film/Video Exhibition This program spans even more diverse styles and subjects than its predecessors, including super-8 film and video, along with 60-mm films. In the midst of an international tour, this show includes December, January, and February presentations at the Tate Gallery in London, the Institute for North American Studies in Barcelona, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and the Centre George Pompidou in Paris.
Mr. McElfresh added that the AFA also holds over 100 documentary films on art. These films are drawn on and used as programs, with individual institutions doing the grouping to suit their specific needs.
Mr. McElfresh concluded with a brief progress report on Before Hollywood: Turn-ofthe-Century Film from American Archives, a forthcoming program consisting of rare and important early films made during the first decade of the cinema (between 1895 and 1913). These films have seldom been seen outside the walls of the archives since their original turn-of-the-century release. For its planning stage, this program has attracted a generous amount of funding from both the National Endowments, as well as the New York State Council on the Arts. An implementation grant has been awarded by the NEA, and additional grants are pending with the NEH and the New York State Council on the Arts.
Mr. Green thanked Mr. McElfresh and Ms. Tai for their reports and then introduced Michael Fox, Director of The Heard Museum, whom he first thanked for his warm hospitality.
Mr. Fox said he was delighted to have the group at the Heard and expressed his appreciation to the AFA for their cooperation and professionalism as it related to Mimbres Pottery and also an earlier exhibition, Generations in Clay. He also expressed his thanks to Virginia Ullman, a very special friend to the Phoenix community.
On motion made and seconded, the meeting was adjourned.
