Dear Cliff:
I met with Anderson Clark, Chairman of RCAAR, and he felt that at this time it would be best if we wait until plans in other regions have coalesced somewhat before we try to bring representatives together. Part of this is simply a time crunch on our part rather than a financial crunch. In addition, I find that David Driskell must be on the West Coast on other business and can attend these meetings as well, so there will be some observation from Nashville at the West Coast meetings. It might be good if you could talk with David prior to his going out there. I will talk with you early in the new year.
In the meantime, I hope you have a joyous Holiday.
Cordially,
Grant Spradling

The Hon. Margaret A. Haywood [REDACTED INFO]
Dear Judge Haywood:
We are in the planning stages of an interesting project to help the nation celebrate the bicentennial of the Revolution. This will be a celebrative offering of our six AMA colleges and will be in the form of an art caravan featuring both visual and performing arts. David Driskell, head of the art department at Fisk, will be the Director. The effort will be coordinated by the staff of this office. We are in process now of assembling an advisory committee. This committee will not be an administrative committee but will be advisory to staff on the general shape of the idea as it progresses. We do not see the need for more than one meeting of the committee because we see it functioning as a group of people to whom we can go individually for ideas and responses to the project as its planning progresses. Would you be willing and able to accept the chair(man) (woman) ship of this committee? We all know how carefully you must consider the expenditure of time in your role as moderator but we do not see this as adding any additional burden to your travel schedule. The staff would come to you from time to time to acquaint you with progress and ask your counsel.
I have enclosed a description of the "Amistad Caravan" as it exists in the idea stage at this time.

The Hon. Margaret A. Haywood January 18, 1974 -2-
Dr. Robert Moss has responded enthusiastically to the idea and has suggested that perhaps it can be part of the celebration at General Synod which you will moderate.
You would be the ideal person to be listed as the chairperson of this advisory committee.
My sincere good wishes to you for a great moderatorship this year.
Sincerely,
Wesley A. Hotchkiss

Mr. David Driskell Fisk University Nashville, Tennessee 37203 Dear David: Here are some of the areas I think we need to discuss.
(1)Develop [handwritten] media [/handwritten] documentation of development of idea and program so that there will be residual value in work we are now doing, secure budget for same and commission development for that part of the program.
(2) Plan, schedule and develop a prototype of the event that would be presented in the spring of 1974 in Nashville that has two components: One is the visual art collection, second, design and development of the animation of the occasion.
(3) Proceed with design for making the Amistad event mobile.
(4) Development of a "pickle. " A suggested idea is that we run a competition in the AMA colleges for the students to design some art object that can be cheaply reproduced that will have the effect of the pickle.
(5) Assemble, design and produce promotional material.
(6) Continue consultative process, document continued consultations.
We need to work on assigning these responsibilities, time table and funding structure.
