his contemporaries and the subject of religion as a source of inspiration in his work. He pointed out that it was the religious vestments that interested him most as he was attempting to take the vestments and the subject of the liturgy of the church as a language through which certain messages could be communicated. He spoke for more than one solid hour on theories relating to the cultural and social history of the United States. He was particularly clear on the subject of the merger of the Indian, European and African cultures into one -- each enrichened by the wells of interest from each other. I found out where a number of his old works were located and prepared to depart for the hotel.

I met Barry Gaither the following morning and we took a cab to Logan Airport as both of us were leaving Boston in the early afternoon. Barry was heading for Atlanta. We talked about the Amistad exhibition as I had presented him with a catalogue of it. He told of having planned to come to the opening of May 2nd only to be sidetracked at the last minute. He spoke of the format of a show he was doing for the Boston Museum which was expected to show major works by Boston and area artists concentrating specifically on Post [crossed out: World War] Depression influences.
