of his success. I'll tell you more about that some
-time.
I would not think of using Elsa Fine's book
as it does little more than any book already on
the market, and the price of $10.00 for a paper
back is highway robbery. That Afro-
American Artists - A Bio-bibliographical Directory
done by the Boston Public Library is another crime
at the same price!! The fact that there is a com-
prehensive listing of articles is the only achievement.
When MBB was phasing out the art program of the
Harmon Foundation she gave a group of paintings
and prints to the Oakland Museum in my name. E.J.
came on the scene - had the William H. Johnson (screen
prints) reproduced, and had all of the articles listed in
the above book, including Africans. She was
probably responsible for mixing up my biography
with that of our son. A phone call could have
straightened out the facts. I wouldn't advise any
one to use that book for reference.
The two books mentioned is the reason (one) why
we must have our conference. Only Black people
(from a black perspective) can write our Art History.
Little has been done since Locke's-Negro in Art and
Porter's-Modern Negro Art. My Black Art Perspective
was done because we needed a program a[direction
to begin creating our own aestetic - value system.
Even MBB said that she didn't like [Doner's?] book.
I've said enough for this time, and I hope to
hear from you soon. Regards to Mrs. Driskell.
Best wishes.

Sincerely,
Claude
