3-8-81 Hey David -- Here's the copy of your May 5 '80 letter about my fire damage. As we discussed, I need a written statement from you that you have now personally seen the items (we agreed Dec 6 '80), that you confirm the damage listed in my May 5th letter and the estimates. (You said you might indicate that now however, the cost for repair + restore would be more). Remember, I need to receive your letter by MARCH 20. Don't forget to look for the Baltimore speech for me on Black Image in American Painting Don't forget to get me a "Black Women Artists" catalog when you go to Omaha I'm enclosing the notice for the Black Architecture exhibit (it should be at Howard U. now, either in School of Architecture or Founders Library) also sending info on Etheridge's dissertation, from which the exhibit is derived. I hope to get a copy as soon as I can scrape the $20. together in my budget. Steven

10-12-81 Hey David - Last month's CARE package was marvelous - you're truly ready to open a card shop; I'll have to save those for "special people". The Charleston materials are especially appreciated. When the "Forever Free" show gets to U of MD this month (Oct 29?), have the gallery save a copy or two of the catalog for me (I've heard they'll cost $5. at the gallery while "street" price is $37.50!). And contrary to rumor, Miss Bibby is ensconced in NYC in school and at Studio Museum. She came through here for an exhibit the end of last month & we chatted extensively (more or less) about some of her things. But she hasn't really changed much. For some strange reason, I'm going through a Patrick Reason phase. Do you have any other info on him or know of any other engravings he did besides what Porter lists? [arrow] Also, please save for "my pile", one of the Van Vechten exhibit catalogs from the Fisk show this past Spring.

9-2-81 David - -No more word yet from Thurlow Tibbs. I think he's still trying to see if his other "client" will pay the full price. - He claims he just made sale of Duncanson's "Falls of Minehaha" for $65,000. - Dendre Bibly (?) going back to school - a grad program in Museums in NYC & to work at Studio Musem w/ Mary Schmidt Campbell, - Margaret Burroughs just got back from South Africa - Ben enjoyed Russian & said, contrary to the projected image, artists can & do create a wide (?) of art - from realistic & representational to abstract.
More later,
S.
P.S. Didn't know if you got your copy of the enclosed.

Hey David
The booklet title you wanted for Sharon Patton:
"Guide to Scholarly Journals in Black Studies"
I paid $6. for mine at a Conference but inside it says address all inquiries to :
The Chicago Center for Afro American Studies and Research Inc. P.O. Box 7610 Chicago, IL 60680
It gives a detailed breakdown on 26 Journals. If she can't get it, try Ethelbert Miller in the Afro American Studies Reading Room at Howard. He can usually put his hands on almost anything like this.
By the way, I know you mentioned Sharon is trying the Winterthur Portfolio, but what about the South Atlantic Quarterly? (Duke University, Durham NC). I'm pretty sure I mentioned it, because when I

2. met their rep at the Org of American Historians Conference they were saying they were looking for someone to do an article on Julian Abele the architect.
Also my buddy Theresa Singleton the archeologist is getting together a group to start an Afro-American material culture journal - hopefully before May. Theresa is the one editing the book on Afro American archeology from Academic Press my article will appear in. She's the only Black PHD in historical archeology (done under Charles Fairbanks at the U of FL). She's now working full time at :
South Carolina Museum Commission P.O. Box 11296 Columbia, SC 29211 803/ 758-8197
I think it would be good for us all to pull together to make the journal really something! And you can tell Sharon that this time the person is not only very bright & talented, but is a friend of mine!
