8 January '99. 818. at 1.30 to meet Father but he was late - pleasant visit there. left [care] at 3.45 - home at 6.30. our road very bad. - [?] came down early to telephone for the Dr. - John Snowden taken suddenly very sick - They are afraid of paralysis - In the aft. the two Aunts went to [Mick] J[?] - Georgie Webster Maury died in Charleston, S.C.

[left margin: Wedn. 18. Partly cloudy.] Heard of John Snowden's death last night at 10. so sad - to have such a family of little children. We sent the telegram to his brother. After [illegible] Father & Mother went up there. Mrs. Chapin came downstairs first time for just six weeks. Newman had to carry her up. In the afternoon we heard of [illegible] the accident to Mr. Buck [Child's] oldest son, Willie - 21 years old - limb of a tree fell on him in the wood - crushed his skull, and he died in about 3 hours. Terrible. Father and I walked to the Briar to call - John Russell Young died.

January '99 Thurs. 19. Clear Colder. Straightened up the house. Ed took eggs and chickens to Mt. Olney - Aunt E. went along. Cousin Sarah Miller came to dinner, to see Cousin Mannie and take Christian Science [?] to her. Mrs Griffith and Miss Farmer called - In the afternoon Aunt Eliza made a wreath, and took up to Addie - Mrs Chapin ate supper with us, and was very bright - Heard from J.J. in the morn. Fri 20.Partly Cloudy. Father went to Willie Child's funeral at Olney. Mother and Aunt Eliza with Newman to drive went to Mr. Zion to John Snowden's - three hours late dinner. Father to Fair Hill to dinner - I took care of the good little baby while Agnes went to the funeral. Mrs Chapin down stairs all day. About 5.30 Mary Strain telephoned to me of my dear little Georgia's [?} death. Such a grief to me - she has always been one of my dearest friends. I never cared for anyone else in the same way - and it came so hard that I can never see her again. Wrote to Mrs Webster - Father & I went to the Lyceum lecture [?]Hudson River

January ' 99.

Sat. 21 Clear Unsettled morn. Father, Mother and I went to Farmer's Institute at Olney - Lunch given by the Dr. C.T N. Lots of wait [?] He must in to part of the meeting - Sister came in the afternoon - I must to Olney with Mary, part of the time Mr Chapin & Fred came about 3 - Company in the kitchen. Ellen to babysit Hermie Campbell to dinner - Sun 22. Clear. Late breakfast. Father, Mr. Chapin and Fred went out to shoot. Mr. Sherman spoke most of the day. Harriet came up to dinner - Mr. C. took Mrs C. a short drive - Right after dinner Mother and I went over to [?] to call. Took Sister little centre piece. done in to Longwork. Mr. C. & Fred left aft. Mon. 23. Clear, warm Busied round in the morning. Margaret spent the day. In the afternoon Annie and Lottie Griffith called. Father took Mrs. C. a drive then went to S.S. Mill and Auburn - Si came to tea.

January 1899.

Tues 24 Rained. Expected Sister, but the rain prevented - Ed took wheat to Wachn Grove - he so often has had rainy days. Father [?] rate and he and Newman [indecipherable] In the afternoon I read over old letters from Georgie - she died a week ago today. Felix had a fight.

Wed 25 Clear Confused morning. Father called at Mr Will Jones and then met Sister, who walked over to spend the day. Rockville carriage came for Mrs Chapin & Auntie Brooke. they left about 12.30. Here just 7 weeks [?] In the afternoon Father took Sister home and went to Longward to tea - Aunt Eliza walked part way to Olney with me - I spent the night there - M. Barry sent me new Con[?]. Direct.

Thurs 26 Clear. Maria Brinie here [indecipherable] kitchen & dining room. Aunt Eliza came to meet me. Lillie and Mary both sick. Addir came to see Father. he & Mother went to Bank & Richland, Hirmon. [?] [?] Olney - I slept 1 1/4 hrs. in the aft.

January. 1899.

Fri. 27 Clear cold windy Harriet here cleaning and sweeping. Ed went to town with potatoes etc. Work man went with him as far as Olney - Ex - Attor Genl. Garland stricken with apoplexy in N. S. Supreme Court. died in 8 mins. In the afternoon Father went to cut wood and called at Springland - Agnes went home and we tended the baby - a cute good little thing. In the eve. Mr. Harduty " a tramp, came to stay all night. Boy came from Griffith's for me to telephone for Dr Gun - Mr. Griffith sick - Harriet cut turkey hen up.

Sat 28. Cloudy cleared [?] The tramp loth to go. Agnes accused him. The man lutting [looting?]. Father went to tend it. Aunt Eliza went to Mr. Olney. Mrs [?] and Sharon for a little visit - mail car - [?] took her down. Father and Mother went to Capt. Griffiths, and Uncle J's to call - I made ginger cake, [?] and lemon pie. In the afternoon Meere And - our [?] and David Diggs called to see Father - come [?] at firm about the mail. Newman [deleted[ Newman went to Bkere - I tarried awhile in the kitchen in the eve - Ed brought two turkeys home from Mt. Olney.
