Petersburg Aug. 7th 1772 Johnston & Bennehan Esteemed Friends

I rec'd your favours for July 28th & 31st. Geo [Dyall?] was gone over before I returnd from Williamsburg. I could not get the Bill from Neill Campbell 'till I went to Richmond, he then did not give me his own Bill, but got me one from Jas. Lyle. I had an opportunity of remitting it a few Days after the Date by a ship for W.haven I have sent the 1st & 2nd Bills of both Setts to John Alston & now inclose you the 3rd — I think you savd 5 prC! by Remitting from last Court I expect the Exch, will be 25. I never saw so hard a struggle between the Drawers & Purchasers as at the last meeting, I staid ten Days & the Exch was unsettled when I came away, many of the merchts are not yet return'd nor I have not heard what they settled it at at last. Buchanan & Co Paid me the £120 which is placed to your Cr. Cap. Carthwright is gone, I shall send the Letter by Cap. Taylor who sails for London in a few Days. Tobo. has not started in Price here nor I think will not this Season, York [Risier?] Tobo. fell 2/6 prC! at the last Hanover Court. Inclos'd is Invoice of the Articles procured for you, I could have sent you the Rum but could not get a Barrel to put it in. Joseph Dowdy is gone from here & has taken away all his Goods so could not get you the smelling Bottle at foot is the weight of the Tobo. & am very respectfully Your assure Friend Edw Stabler

Messrs Johnston & Bennehan Gentn By the Bearer we have sent you there Ar[ticles] you have orderd in your Letter of 27th July except the [page torn] & Sugar of which we have none at present [neither] is there any at Milners else should have procur[ed] them for you, we expect a supply of Sugar in a [page torn] Days out of which shall send the Quantity or [page torn] by the first of yr waggons, the money you dre[page torn] on us for favour of Ed. Strabler was paid at Co[page torn] the Exchange was settled at 25pCt. — Lower To[page torn] was offerd at 16/- p100 [?] [?] even in Octr. Inclosed you have an Accot. of the Articles now [page torn] which with safe to hand & to give Satisfaction [page torn] We have also annexed an Acco. of the Tobo. you sent down lately with the Marks &c

NB. the Charge for the Iron may appear [hy?] but when you consider that we give £22,,10/- Cash for it at Norfolk, with the frieght & Storage & take payments in Commodities on which there is such a loss, you cannot think the charge was unreasonable, it is the same as every one of the Merchs. here charge their best Customers.
