During this spring -- 1860-, my cousin Fabius & his wife
Marca, made us a visit-; coming on March 10th, and leaving
on Apr, 23d -- I took them both riding in the country frequent-

hemorrhage whilst with us-, after spending the day fishing at
Mrs. Lines' Mill Pond -- He was quite an artist; his talent in
this way had excited the admiration and interest of a wealthy
gentleman; a generous friend, who furnished him with the means
for travelling -- He spent the following winter on the
Mediterranean-; visiting Smyrna -- &c. but he died before the
next season --

The Secession movement began this year -- on the 1st of
May -- We received news by telegraph of the withdrawal of the

Our dear friend Sophy McBride -- now Spencer-; she having
married Sam Spencer of New Port -- died at that place on the
28th of May this year -- my 33rd birthday-; after a long,
lingering sickness -- in which she suffered terribly-, with
nurse's sore mouth [Stanatitis]-; the ulcerations extended all
through the alimentary canal - from the mouth down, entirely
the bowels -- She left an infant only a few weeks old-; named
Fannie-; she grew up & married a Mr. Byrd of Tallahassee-; after
several years of married life, became a widow, & again married
a gentleman from Virginia, where
