She was grateful enough when she opened the other --

I went there on Tuesday Mar. 29th-, leaving my wife
with a baby only 24 hours old-; I found Eva very low-, &
could not leave her till Saturday-; was gone for five days-;
and for all this hard, trying work, I got nothing -- When
poor Evans died, he owed me seven or eight hundred dollars --
for such laborious work as this-, and he left his poor widow
& children, without a penny -- on my hands to take care of --

On Saturday -- July 9th, we lost our little Bessie -- She
was only a little over 3 months old-; she was taken away very
suddenly, from an attack of choleramorbus-; we buried her on
Sabbath morning, at 9 o'clock --

On Friday -- July 29th, we lost our daughter Mollie --
a splendid child; the handsomest of our children; well grown
and developed for her age-; a little over five years-; she was
sick about a week -- a congestive attack-; she was an
independent, outspoken little darling -- In the first of her
sickness she spoke of me as "that bad man papa" -- because I
held her nose in giving her some oil -- Tenie Sibley sat up
with her the last night of her life-; she died at 9 A.M. on
the 29th -- It was a very bitter trial to give her up --
There was a great deal of sickness on the Apalachicola River
at Jim Evans' place; on Aug. 16th he brought up his little
daughter Eva-, very sick with congestion-; his wife Sallie was
too sick to accompany them-; and he returned next day to
bring her up as soon as possible -- Eva died in our house on
the evening of the 18th at 5:45 P. M. -- I immediately sent
