*Corpl. Hawkins had the lower end of the right thigh bone
shattered, & the ball was in the wound -- the limb ought to
have been immediately amputated-, & he would have probably
recovered -- But after a sage consultation, of the Doctors,
to my amazement, they let the limb alone -- When the man got
to Lake City 5 days late, amputation was performed-; but as
was to be expected -- the poor fellow died -- it was an
outrageous case of malpractice --
