My dear wife's health continued to decline in spite of all I could do -- She was again pregnant, and I looked forward to her confinement with apprehension; but I was not prepared to expect her death as soon as it came --

On Saturday -- Sept 9th she was very sick-; got suddenly worse, and very much worse-; after supper, after one of her vomiting spells, as I was helping her, I saw that a fearful change had come; her pulse suddenly collapsed. and her ex-tremities became cold and purple-; and her faculties became suddenly bemused -- this was about 11 o'clock -- I ran across the street for Aunt Mary Harris, and she & I were up with her all night-; she sank gradually and steadily; we had abundant help from our dear, kind friends-; everything that could be done, was done -- I was in a state of nervous prostration such as I never experienced before or since -- I had a very painful rising on one of my fingers which caused such intense suffering that I had to take Elixir of Opium often, so as to keep up -- She died at 5 A.M. on Wednesday, Sept. 13th, after having given birth the evening before (at 10.30) to a male child who only breathed a few minutes-; it was buried in her arms --
