peace / sore hand better / quilt / breakfast / Time & tide waits for no one / it will fail. I dont know nor hear what they are, only a rumor I suffered a good deal with my sore hand last night better this morning William is patching up my bead quilt that got burned We had a fine mess of stewed back bones this morning Hard work to keep along the "time", does not stop, it goes on as tho there was nothing the matter The same number of days Weeks months in the year as there were when we were prosperous & hapy, yet it seems to go on remarkable slow with trouble & distress all around. O how long will it continue

Wed 23 / Cold weather / It was verry cold all night the ground froze Milk froze and verry cold indeed We are trying to get Wood & keep fires which is extreamly hard to do (No news yet this morning)

Th 24 / Armey near / Greate excitement the Armey of the Confed are near and on the march destroying every thing in the way of provender before them

1864 Novr Th 24 / fight commenced / [sideways margin fighting all round us /] The Weather has moderated through the night This morning early before sun rise the fighting commenced near & in the direction of Mt Pleasant continued on to near Columbia I think it seased near G M Martins at 3 in the evening The firing continued in a short intervilles to the lane between Jaggers & Us The Confeds Ocupied the Campbellville rode to the Mouth of the lane going to Mathews They streached there lines to the top of the hill West of McCanlesss & to the top

Shooting / line of battle / M L Johnson took Jack Patton horses / 28th Miss / Captured our horses &c / Olia George / Gray filla / Shooting Striking the house / Fedrels friendly / of the hill to near the Joshua Thomas pawn. The Fedrels ocupied the Pulaskey Turnpike rode they faught between the 2 rodes The Confeds ocupied My house & yard stood behind the trees in the yard & houses and shot at the Yankeys who who ocupied the Woods above the Shop The firing continued & was kept up between the 2 pikes until late in the evening by the Scouts on each Side

A Confed Soldier Johnson took Jack Pattons horse the Yankeys took Olia the Gray filly Amanda & the George horse They took them at the close of the firing late in the evening they soldiers that took Olia and other horses said they belong to the 18th Kentucky Cavalry I think they would rather tell a lye than the truth. In shooting several balls struck the houses & kitchens but no one was hurt round & in the yard as I have heard of yet. The fences was all pulled down all over the Country Stock all in the fields & the fatening hogs all out. Many Fedrels soldiers came in the evening appeared friendly Some of them got something to eat. I was not verry well all night I have been unwell ever since I got my hand cut My stomach & bowels is a good deal out of fix

Fri 25 / line of battle / fighting / This has been a day of Greate excitement the guns are firing all around & preparations making for battle While guns are firing in all directions the Confeds are Campt all around and all over my plantation heavy scrimaging near

Rankins & in my Woods lotts East of the house

1864 Novr Sat 26 / fighting line of battle / Rain / Burning houses / Wounded / Greate preperations are making this morning for battle Scrimging Commenced about half way to Town at day light The Canon & small arms are heard verry actively the lines of battle is formed all around us (prospects for rain) We learn that several houses are burning down by the Fedrels near & this side of Town Mr --James-- Mrs Trotters Mr Hughes, Wm Flemings We hear of the Confed wounded passing South Majr Genl J. C. Brown & Staffs head quarters in our house The

Sun 27 / Genl Brown & Staff / distruction of property / soldiers are Campted in every piece of Woods they can find on the plantation burning up the fences cutting down the trees all over the plantation 500 Wagons campt all round in the Yard, lotts, & around the Spring so we could not git any Watter to drink only by a guard We could get no Meal done with out 4 days & nights the Mill being pressed. They have taken 150 Acres of Corn all except what they missed in the field

on Sun 27 Ola filly Dec 16 William give the Ola filla to John on Genl Warlkers Staff after she was pressed / Sick man / Capt Shoot badly burned / Feds left Monday night 28th /

Killed nearly all our fat hogs, Bull, took the Oley filla, in short took every thing that they could make use of & they got all we have they quarreled for more They left a sick man here a Mr Short on the Staff of Genl Quarles he is verry bad off head burned They have been fightind round Town down all all the time the The Fedrels in a body with many Citizens left Town, Monday night. The reargard of the Fedrels stayed back for several days to prevent the Confeds from following after the m across the river they Confeds are persuing after them We hear

Genl Walther & Staff / Son Thomas / Pillow / they have been fighting as far as Franklin Genl Walthel & Staff had there head quarters in my house 2 or 3 days Son Thomas eat dinner Wed 30 took away with him the Gray filla

We cant hear what has become of Anthony, Ciaro, Jack, Read, Monk Green came home They may have gone or keeping out of they way Not seen since last Friday. Genl Pillow & Suit at home

1864 Decr Fri 2nd / fight / Greate slaughter / 10 Genls killed & wounded / Corn / Rain . Our horses & boys all gone / News of desperate battle fought near or at Franklin on yesterday Thursday 1st Dec in which the Confeds lost 10 Genls & the loss is variously thought to be from 5,000 to 10,000 on the Confeds side The Fedls are retreating towards Nashville they faught in the fortifications & not so many of them killed We are trying to gather up the scatering remains of our Corn here & there through the fields but find verry little not enough in ordinary times to pay for the trouble of gathering. The fences are so burned up that what we cant gather is lost every bodys Stock is on it

It has been verry warm & raining, showry for the last 3 days. I am suspicious that our Our boys Jack, Monk & Read was instrumental in the Fedrels taking Olia, Amanda & & the bay or brown horse George on Thursday the 24th Novr that was

The Canons are heard in the direction of Franklin or Springhill heavy firing after dinner A greate many wounded in Town from the battle at Franklin. I hear through Col A. Looney that Martha Jane & her family was all well & that W. D. Mayes is forage Master in the Armey

We see a greate many of our Neighbors boys & old acquaintences come in A young man that Sister Jane raised Hanesie & Porter Wilkins from Oxford & many others told me of Capt Wheeler being wounded in the leg

Sun 4th / Canon / The weather is some cooler Wind from the N.W. this morning & a little cloudy There are a greate many Southern Soldiers the disaster to the Confeds were not so heavy as first reported at Franklin. A beautiful day after dinner
