1862 I got the following Sides of Mr Moore Nov the 24th Recd 1 Side of upper leather Weight 8 ½ lbs Feby 1863 [Recd] 1 Side of Sole Settled on 1861 hides

[along right margin of following entry:] See Fby 4 1864 Sent three beef hides one calf skin & one hog skin May 16th 1863 (these are not settled Recd May 18 1863 three sides of Sole & one side of upper leather, Settled on hides of 1863

1861 Wheat 20 acres sewed Dec. 16th We finished brushing in Wheat

Vinegar how made 40 Gallons of Rain Watter 1 Gallon of Molasses 4 pounds of Acetic Acid It will be fit for use in a few days Acetic Acid costs 25 cents per pound this is the recpt by which most of the cider Vinegar is made & sold in Country Stores

The 1st Vote for and agt the Union was taken the 1st Feby 1861 Carried for the Union by 10,000. Govr Harris & the State Legislature Conveyed & Seeded the State of Tennessee over to the Southern Confederacy before the next vote was given for & against the Union, Was this right or Wrong

The Southern Confederacy by her Congress made laws making it a capitol offence to give aid and comfort to the enemy, before the next election was held, the Democrat Herrald

& the Nashville Union published in their papers to vote for the Union was giving aid & comfort to the enemy, or to vote with a closed ticket would be a Surcumstance of disloyalty to the Southern Confederacy [hand pointing] Was this right or Wrong

Apr. 16 The Southern Confederacy distroyed & shelled Fort Sumpter a fort built by the Gov. of the U.S. to protect agt Forrin enemies, & killed and wounded the soldiers therein that was placed there by the Govrment & was not doing them any harm. this was the Commencement of this awful condition of our Country [hand pointing] Was this Write or Wrong

The southern troops located in and took possession of Kentucky with the purpose of subjecting her in to secession districting the State into Congressional Dists electing members in there there Congress all befor Kentucky had Seceded from the Union passing laws making these Citizens Subject to the penal laws of the Southern Confederacy, while she had never by her people or Legislature had ever Seceded. [hand pointing] Was this right or wrong

After batting down fort Sumpter they threatened to distroy Washing City in 30 days & left for the Capitol with 30,000 soldiers & was stopt in sight of the Capitol (on the Irlington Heights) all this time no attempts was made to do them the least injury [hand pointing] was this Write or Wrong

1861 William & Thomas gone to the wars. December 16th 1861. My two Sons B. W. Porter and Thos. L. Porter left home for Camp Maury near Nashville William elected Captain & Thomas 1st lieutenant in a Cavalry Company of our Most respectable Neighbors, Fanna & her little daughter left also, to live with his father & mother until Thomas is discharged and comes home. May God with his infinate Wisdom ^severely punish those ^North & South who was instrimental in bringing on this dredful calamity upon our once beloved & prosperous Country ---- Nimrod Porter

[hand pointing] B. W. Porter was elected Major by acclimation Decr the 25th at Camp Maury in Col. Gants Regt - William returned home upon business Decr 26th 1861 at night

William returned to the Camps Decr 31st 1861 morning

Jany 4 1862 Recd a letter from William dated 3rd Inst from Camp Maury Jany 4 1862 Recd a letter from Thomas dated Jany 2d Inst. Cap Maury

Willam & Thomas returned home Monday night Jany 6th 1862

William sick with bad cold 6. 7. 8. 9. 10 & better 11

Thomas & Fanna came home Friday 10 from Witlows

Thomas had bad cold both him & Wm went to Town Sat 11 Jany

Thomas left for Camp Maury by the morning train 15th [Jany]

John left for Camp Maury taking the Jersy Waggon & 2 horses William 2 & Thomas one Monday the 20th Jany 1862

Thursday 23) William & Thomas left Camp Maury for Clarksville January 1862) Fort Donalson upon 2 Steam boats

Thursday 23d Jany 1862, John got home from Camp Maury

Jany 28. 1862 I sent to W & Thomas a letter by Bank Brown to Ft. Donaldson Ft. Donaldson

from Mat at Fort Donaldson Friday 24 Jany. I understand Thomas took a company & went in command of a scouting party, not returned (see Mats letter to his wife.

Jany 31 Redc a letter from Wm dated the 26 Inst. informing me that Thomas is gone as the officer of the Scout

Feby 2 - a letter from Thomas to Fanna dated 27 Jany he returned home to Camp off Scout the 27 - being gone 4 days (all is well)

Feby 4th letter from Thomas dated Jany 31st. all well.

Feby 5 Wed. Fanna & Janie & her brother Wm. Webster came at night [Feby] 8 [Fanna & Janie] all went home Sat morning the 8, wet day & cold

Ft. Henry Feby 7th Friday Telegraf news Fort Henry taken & the inmates

Feby 13 recd letter from William & Thomas at Fort Donalson dated the 8th Feby inst, they had hard fighting

1 Feby 13th Dispatch at 3 oclock evening the battle commenced in ernest at Fort Donalson, daylight in the morning, by land & Watter at 12 oclock Still progressing with greate energy upon all sides at night. The enemy gave way

2 Feby15 awful fighting all day greate loss on all sides the Federals reinforced to 50,000 the Confederates reinforced to. the Southerners gane the day. Dispatch late at night terable Slaughter & loss of live Doct Pillow, Brown & Hays gone to Ft Donalson

3 Feby 15 I sent a letter to William & Thomas by Mack Esq to Fort Donalson

Feby 16 4 oclock in the evening not one word from ft. Donl this (Sunday) is the most heart rending day to me I have ever experienced in all my whole life the awful state of affairs and the greate uncertainty of events, & the Suspence is truly almost too much for me to beare O God help us

1862 War Feby 16th Recd Intelligence at 6 oclock P.M. the fall of Fort Donalson after fighting all night & all day, to day, enemy had 75,000 men, all either killed or taken prisoners (See Wm B. Wilsons note.)

Mon. Feby 17 after going to Town My feelings somewhat relieved
