had not been allowed to swell, & sprout, a little before planting. The weather having been unfavorable for it to come up, it received a check which probably occasioned more of the seed to rot than otherwise would have rotted. For early planting then, my opinion is that either the seed should not be rubbed, or if rubbed that they should not be allowed to swell.

I wish to make the experiment, with a view to the improvement of the land, of plowing under some oats, previously sowing peas upon then, to be afterwards turned under likewise

Another experiment, with the sane view, ought to be tried likewise. In Planting Corn in Cotton land, sow every other Cotton row in oats early in the season, to be turned under in the summer or fall, previously sowing peas, afterwards to be turned under, to be planted upon the next season

May 11th. 1852. Rain to day about breakfast time Ground too wet, after the rain, to scrape or plow. Set out a few potato sprouts, 13 rows. Hoe hands went over the Lewis field & most of the Huckaby field, chopping weeds, it cleaning around stumps & trees Thermometer 81° at 12 M.

with hot salt, to her forehead, & covered her with a blanket to keep her warm. The bag of hot salt was renewed frequently & was made hot enough to take the skin from her forehead

May 12th. 1852 Planted White Lady pea in the potato patch, also planted about 100 hills, 5 peas to the hill, of the Java pea. One row of the Lady pea was planted in hills

I went to plant some of the Lady and some of the Java in the field among corn when the other peas are planted

Planted 6 hills of the Java 5 to the hill, & 20 hills of the Lady, 20 or 25 to the hill, in the north Gin field, in the first row of peas which runs through the field along the sedge land embracing the old spring

Thermometer 81° at 12 M. Resumed the scraping of Cotton to day, with 14 scrapers They passed over the Strlcklin field, 12 acre Negro house field & 6 or 8 acres in Negro field - in all about 50 acres The Corn stalks are somewhat in the way of the scrapers. The hoe hands passed over the balance of the Huckaby field k chopped through the Strlcklin & 12 acre Negro house field - being 46 acres they chopped out, besides their work on the Huckaby field, & besides passing over the corn in the large pond which was done by 6 hands.

Took John M. Redus' note for W. B. Miller for 7809, & sent it to him, informing him that I had not intended becoming, nor did I regard myself as, Mr. R's security Cloudy, & sprinkling, & warm

May 13th. 1852 Peter went into the field to day, to scraping cotton The scrapers (16 going to day) passed over the balance of the negro field, the Arnold field, & about 6 acres of the South Gum field - in all about 62 or 64 acres. The hoe hands chopped through the negro field and Arnold field, about 64 acres

Mr Rhodes altered a mule for me to day & spayed about a doz hogs

The Cotton planted in the Spencer field last Monday is already sufficiently up for a half stand

The Corn plows, 9 in number, started on the third round yesterday evening in the R Nx field

To day there were but 8 plows going. They lacked about 6 acres of finishing the R Nx field having plowed to day about 30 acres, 2 furrows to the row Sowed Cabbage seed in the garden

10th. The seed was rubbed, or rolled The army worm is said to be in the neighborhood of Holly Springs

The wheat crop is said to be affected with the Smut in several neighborhoods

The 16 scrapers passed over the balance of the S. Gum field, all of the N. G. field, & about half of the Thomas field - equal to about 66 acres. The most of the land we have scraped for a few days past, was in Corn last year, & on that account, owing to the Corn stalks & old grass, cannot bo gone over as rapidly as land that was in Cotton last year

The hoe hands passed over the two Gum fields & about 6 acres in the Thomas field, in all about 60 acres. There were 40 hands, little & big, at the hoe to day. 3 grown hands were not at work to day. Reena has been lying up for several days. Charles is lying up to day. Alfred's Ann who has been lying in, went out a few days ago

The 8 Corn plows finished the R Nx field & plowed about 22 acres in the Kenedy field in all about 28 acres. 2 of the Corn plows did less than the others, on account of the failing, to some extent, of the horses

May 15th. 1852. The hoe hands finished the Thomas field about 10 oclock

& stopped for the day - having gone over about 30 acres Planted Lima Beans

The stand of cotton is now a very good one, all over the plantation

The scrapers finished the balance of the Thomas field & all of the Bars field - in all about 40 acres - a little before 12 & stopped for the day

The Corn plows stopped at the same time, having gone over about 15 acres of the Kenedy field

We have now gone over, with the scrapers, about 305 acres, with the hoes about 280, and with the corn plows, on the third round, about 80 acres

In planting Cotton another season be sure to have the openers so regulated that the Cotton shall not be covered deep To that end, the wings should be let down to the iron & the coverer should be scooped out so as to leave a narrow ridge of dirt over the seed higher than the main ridge

It would be well too, I think, to provide every plow with a coulter to prevent the dirt from being turned up in clods, & every Corn plow should be provided with a board to prevent the dirt from covering up the Corn. With suoh a plow we could run nearer to the Corn

Peas should be covered very shallow
