His mind & his heart are pure, he loves God & mankind, envy
& jealousy have no place in his heart; he performs his duty in every
relation of life; as a Moral man, he is perfect; he would not be
called a Christian, except perhaps by his Wife, I hope & [trust]
he is one, the sins he has committed, I trust he is peni-
tent
for, that he has prayed to God for his forgiveness. he
makes no profession of religion, & does not think the forms of
religion as important as I do. He is afraid I trust altogether
in form, which is not the case, I know the heart must be
right in the light of God, but & that all those forms that God
has commanded should be observed, praying, reading the
Bible, going to Gods holy temple, partaking of the com-
munion, baptism &c, these things will not alone save us, but
if the heart is right, the heart loves to observe the form, in
obedience to Gods command, & these observances may be the
means of leading the heart to God; one may go to chuch
without any religious object, but while in Church, they
are more in the way to be benefitted, than sitting idly in
the streets, or at home reading some trifling book. So I hope
my dear husbands views on all subjects will be perfect, & that
he will not always suspect that the form of religion is only
the cloak to cover the want of it.
