he is like him perfect. I know of no fault he has; & I am
his wife, & know him intimately; & look upon him w/
an impartial eye; he always judges right; can foresee
future events with a prophets eye; & where once has form-
ed his opinion, never changes, for there is never a cause
for him to change; he never puts self interest in competi-
tion with his duty to others & his country; he always
goes for the good of his country, even at the sacrifice
of his own interest; never actuated by the love of office
& honor; he is affectionate in his disposition & when he
married me, loved me with more ardor than any
hero of romance loved his mistress; 10 years after he
wrote in his journal that his love was as strong as
ever; he loves his chidren, & has through life given
them every advantage; that his means enabled him
to; & his law practice was very large; he is the only man
I know of who is incapable of doing a mean or wrong
thing; he has been kind to his servants, & sincere to his
friends, where he has once loved never changing.

was as pure as I was; he pays every debt, never lets any
one suffer through him. He has been a Union man
all his life, saw from the first the union that would
ensue to our country through Disunion, & tried to
prevent the Disunion spirit from spreading, he never
could be elected to Congress on account of his Union
principles; because the other side was the popular
side, if he had only advocated Disunion doctrines
he would have been elected to Congress long ago; & had
