7 [195] DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1792, 1792, March, 26, Cloudy morning- My father, G.C.Taylor & I went to Court- Smart rain which made very dirty about Court house- Dined at Nooe's- Bought two small Rocks for 1/6 Mr.Everitt a Young Gent Studying physick with Doct'r Gilmer came home with us Rec'd a letter from W[illiam-brother] Taylor of Kentucky- another from F.S.Taylor. 27, Cloudy morning. We went to Court- there was no rain & the ground got somewhat firmer. Gave G.C.Taylor a Mem'dm to buy some articles at Fredericksburg & requested him to sell a Hnd Tob'o. Capt Conway came home with us- G.C.T. went to Mr.T.Bell's 28, Rained a very little before day- fine warm day. Planted a Cherry tree at South side of the yard, w'ch Col'o Madison made his boy bring yesterday to Co house. Capt Conway, my father & I went to Court. At our gate met Mrs Burnley walking to C.Taylor's, paid her 3/- for a vest made last week by her. Sally was with her. Thunder, lightning with a slight shower about 3 o'clock. My father & I left the Court house just before it began. James Bell, Alex'r Shepherd & J.Taylor jr came w'th G.C.Taylor in the evening. We sat up late playing at Loo. Rec'd a letter from W.Taylor [son of Jonathan] of Botetourt wrote at Richmond. 29, Cloudy with a little rain, sunshine in evening- J.Bell- Alex Shepherd & J.Taylor jr went away in evening. Very warm- Vegetation has been rapid for these two days- Buds having put out more in them than they had done before. 30, Fine clear morning- Capt Burnley breakfasted with us- Reuben Taylor called here on his way to Court house- where he intends offering his horse to Mr.Howard for £22. G.C.Taylor walked to C.Taylor's & came by J.Taylor's and here to diner- Afterwards, although it rained a little, he set out on his return to Castle Hill, changed cooler. 31, Some Clouds and cold. The Mountains appear quite white with snow and sometimes hid by snow falling from flying clouds, but I saw none here. Reuben Taylor & Jos Clark came here early to spay some Shoats- 5 were Spayed here & 7 at the Overseers. They went away after dinner. Alex'r Holmes was here and said Absalom Smith desired him to ask my father to send him some money. My father sent 5 Dollars by him for A.Smith. April, 1, Smart frost, the ground crusted with ice but believe it not so severe as to do much injury- in low places some Cherries killed, tho'not in bloom. Reu Taylor called here, I went with him to Court house, it was reported some Minister would preach a sermon but none came- and but few people, Reu Taylor, J.Taylor jr & John Scott came from Court house and dined here- fine day and a little milder 2, Slight Frost- J.Taylor rode here with his son Gibson. My father Packed up his Bacon (the Joints) in Salt. Capt Burnley was here & got Onion seed- We went to J.Taylor's to dinner- Ch's Taylor's family were there- Smoky weather and warm 3, Warm, smoky and fair day. Burnt a plant Patch in little pasture and fenced it but did not sow seeds. Julian King got some Hemp from G,T, 4, Sowed Cabbage, Lettuce, Onion and a little Celery seeds in the Plant Patch- Scattered round it White & common Mustard seeds- Sowed Sundry seeds in Asparagus bed- Cabbage, Col Turnip, Cresses, Lettuce &c Beets in Borders. Uncle Taylor and James Taylor dined here- Uncle Taylor paid me the balance he owed. Cloudy morning with a little fine rain- Afternoon rainy and warm- rained faster at night.
