DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1797, 22 [339]
1797,
October,
1,Sunday, Rained last night moderately,a little this morning, fair mild evening. Wm.Twisdel [or Truisdell] came here- I lent him 10 F.Crowns,he said he owed Mr.Jenkins & would soon repay it. After dinner I went to C.Taylor's, e came from Col.Madison's whilst I was at his house, he had been to see Maj'r Hite's sick child(Jno Campell with C.T.). Maj'r Moore,John Moore,Gab.Barbour, Tho. Jenkins, John Nooe & Harriet Triplett at C.Taylor's.
2, Heavy Fog in morn. Fair day. A boy from J.Taylor's came and got 5 ps bacon and stunned it. I walked in evening to J.Taylor's & got Newespaper. J.Taylor jr got home from Fred'g las night.
3, Fair, very warm & dry. Had Fodder house made by Hay stacks. I said at home.
4, A slight shower of rain before sunrise, cleared up very windy all day. Changed cool at night. Lost old Corn house key-Sent 2 bags Corn(out of New house)to Dad's Mill,got one ground into very coarse meal. I was at home all day.
5, Thursday, A slight frost,the first I have seen,tho'have heard of several very slight- REmarkably clear day and mild. I rode to McKinney's store-bought a lock to put on Corn house and other articles which I paid 16/4 for. I returned home to dinner.
6, Hazy and warm. Had the Corn that broke off when plowing,picked up and brought to the Fodder house. I walked to Court house and read Newspapers- Reuben Taylor overtook me so I returned,came home with me, Trimmed my hair and dined here.
7, Warm, Hazy morn, clouds & thunder at night. Had about 2 Hhds New corn (picked up in field) put into the Cornhouse- M.Biggers had his part of it. Reu Taylor sent his girl with a pot,into which I put about 8 lbs hogs lard. After dinner I walked to J.Taylor's, he got home last night from Fred'g. He let me have 2 quire paper 3/- I Cr. him for.
8. [SUNDAY], Warm, smoky,windy-some clouds at night. I went to J.Taylor's-Reu.Taylor & son Billy dined there. The family all at home.
9, Clear and windy,warm,very dry. I killed 2 squirrels.Staid at home.
10, Slight frost, clear and dry. Mrs. Gilden sent Julian King & got 1/2 Barrel Corn. Had a Hhd Threshed Wheat put into cellar-Had 3 Bus Wheat put into my bag-to-send to Mill.Macon Biggers delivered his old Wheat (37 Bushels) to Ben Hancock Also 13 Bus'new wheat to make a load. I did not go from home-Got some Chestnuts.
11, Frost bit tender things- Fair cool and dry- Reu.Taylor sent me 4 Carp. Had a bed of Wheat trod.T.Bell was here before breakfast to enquire for his steer. I walked to Wheat Stacks and from there(in evening)went to C.Taylor's-He at Col.Madison's-Sister not well.
12, Frost, Fair. Treading Wheat- I staid at home.
13, Frost, Hazy. I wrote to Mess'rs Blairs to send me by Joe-a Sack of Salt, a Side Seal leather, 1M shoe tacks & 1/2 lb Tea. Treading Wheat- Got Chestnuts.
14, Clouds & dropped rain. Had a Hhd Corn removed into Old house.
15, Sunday, A few clouds in morning-Fair,smoky,mild evening. I went to a sermon at Court house. Returned by James Taylor's- Mr.O'Neill, Capt Conway & Reu Taylor dined there. Capt Conway paid me 13/6-for 13 1/2 Butter sent him 13th March last No acco't was made of it-
16, A little frost-very clear and moderate,very dry. Trod my last Wheat from straw Reu Taylor called here going to Madion's Mill to know if I wou'd go-but as I wanted my mare to tread Wheat, I staid. Tho's Bohon paid me 30/8, a balance he owed for Wool & Bacon. Joe Brought me from Mess'rs Blairs, a Side Seal leather,8 lb. and a Sack Salt,which he said he saw only 3 1/2 Bushels put in. I paid Joe for bringing 3/-
17, Fair,smoky and warm. I sent two bags Corn to Nelson's Mill, did not get meal, sent them to Dade's, got one bag meal. Had 5 Hhds Wheat brought from Wheat yard by the Barn & put into Wheat. about 50 bus'still in Chaff.
