August,
1, Thursday, Fair pleasant morning- A light rain afternoon warm & cloudy night.
I was too unwell to go to Barbecue at Mr. Verdier's, took Jallap & Ipecac-
J. Taylor called here in morning & got Office key- Ch'w Taylor called here
returning from Barbecue- Told me he had purchased part of the articles I gave
him mem'o & money for last Monday- he ret'd £4.11.3. to settle when the
articles comes- Ch.Taylor jr was here with this father. Rec'd a letter from G.C. Taylor
who continues ill-
2, Cloudy morn. James Taylor called this morning-to see how I was- I continue
unwell & took salts- J. Taylor went on to Orange Springs- Sent Frank & Martin to
McKinney's Mill w'th 6 bus Corn & got meal. Got some plump fine cherries from
Morella tree.
3, Cloudy morn- Broken clouds & sunny afteroon. Reuben Taylor came & got me to
write Adv't for Sale of Land &c. he went back before noon- C. Taylor called,
had been to Fox to enquire if his goods were left there- they were not- he
soon went home- Yager brought up part of the things. I sent to C. Taylor's &
got-Rice, Wood-ware, paper,& Corks, F.S.T. sent- Also Sundry medicine C.T. bought
4, Sunday, Thin clouds in morning- A moderate rain about noon fell gently about 2
hours- The Hawk killed C. Taylor's Turkey Cock last night, crippled one Turkey
hen & another missing- A Goose was killed 2 nights before. I had the Cock cooked.
I hear Mrs Crutchfield sent last night for C. Taylor that he went early
this morning to the Springs to see her, she being said to be very unwell. I
staid at hone.
5, Great dew- Fair with Scattered clouds. Jas Taylor's Sawney came & got a Gammon
bacon 10½ lb. said his mistress directed him- John Kinser got a Midling,
18 lb Bacon & paid 20/3 for it. Patrick Bell got a Shoulder & Midling 25 lb
bacon and paid 26/3- 1/10½ due to be paid by Court. In evening a Mr Findley
(of Augusta) called here to enquire if I had some Land in Jefferson County for
sale- I told him I expect Co. James Taylor might- he went on. Finished weeding
& hilling Corn yesterday.
6, Getting dry- Fair. Negroes weeding my & their potatoes &c.
7, J. Taylor was here, said Mrs Crutchfield was too ill to come from Springs, w'ch
detains his family there. I walked to Court house & got Newspapers.
8, Thursday, Fair and dry. I was very unwell last night, high fever ad got very
little sleep- Felt Chinches in bed. Had Bedsteads in my back room taken
down, Scalded &c- Heard that Tho's Barbour & family came yesterday to J. Taylor
their youngest child unwell- I was very unwell or wou'd have walked there.
C. Taylor began to make Bricks for his chimneys yesterday- I sent Martin to
assist.
9, Dry and clear-began to want rain. Sent M. Atkins & Essex to seek one of the
young Oxen,a Young Steer & the Bull, they only saw the Bull, which they cou'd
not get home- Reu. Taylor called here going to Richards Store, he returned &
dined here. I am very unwell. J. Taylor called here after breakfast, going to
the Springs, T. Barbour & family went down with him- he told me he left Mrs
Crutchfield very ill yesterday & got C. Taylor to go there Last night- his wife
still at Springs. I had part of Turnep patch weeded & seed sown in thin parts.
J. Gibson Taylor, James Pendleton & James Barbour came here from School & went
early next morning to go to Springs.
10, Hazy morning- A good moderate rain in the evening & a Slight Shower in night.
The boys went before breakfast to J. Taylor's, said they intend to get breakfast
at Springs. I continue unwell, my mouth sore inside- Had Flax laid in
Meadow to dew rot.
11, Sunday, Thin clouds without rain-warm- I am rather better than have been for
3 or 4 days. Sent Frank & got Newspapers at post office, Also a letter about
Fire Insurance &c. I walked to C. Taylor's-dined there- he returned in Evening
from Hansbrough's & Rose Hill- Polly Taylor came from Capt Conway's
