DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1769,
1769,
August,
4, Cloudy and a little rain. My father lent Miss M.Conway horses & George to go to see Mrs Madison (who continues ill) George ret'd w'th the horses. Sowed Scotch Cale, Hanover Turneps, Gresses & lettuce seeds & onion in the garden.
5, I walked with J.Taylor to Schoolhouse, he went home & I returned to dinner. Lamb killed.
6, J.Taylor & C.Taylor dined here.
7, Piles continues on me- Capt Burnley dined here. Had 63 Bushels clean wheat put in Cellar. Sowed Mountain Cresses in bed next stable. Winter Cale in part next necessary house and in the coeners of squares-
8, Saturday, Did not send the boys to school tho' the boys said Mr Goodlett told them he would be there- Put up Metheglin in Cask- George went for Miss M.Conway- Mrs Madison better-
9, [Sunday] The boys went to Sermon at Mrs James's preached by N.Sanders- J.Taylor walked here in evening.
10, C.Taylor here about 9 & 10 o'clock- G.C.Taylor got home from Caroline- says friends are well & weather seasonable, we are very dry here. Hear that Col.*James Taylor has been courting- *[This was Col.James Taylor IV of Caroline. his first wife died May 27th, only about two months before-WKA--He married his second wife, Mrs Sarah Taliaferro, Sept. 2, 1789-PFT]
11, Very warm and dry, hear taht *Capt Lee died last night at Maj'r Lee's- Went with my father to C.Taylor's-dined there with Capt Conway & Capt Burnley, paid C.T. 6/- in part for medicine. [*Capt John Lee, a relative-PFT]
12, Staid at home, very warm & dry. G.C.Taylor went from home yesterday, ret'd today
13, G.Taylor rode to Shop to get his horse shod-Bottled 12 bottles Metheglin. G.T. dined at A.Shepherd's
14, J.Taylor & son, H.Pendleton & Alex Shepherd dined here. G.C.T. went home w'th A.Shepherd. G.Taylor gave his snorting mare for Smith's tools to Jos.Bell.
15, A little rain last night. Went w'th G'Taylor, Richard & Colby to J.Taylor's to dinner. Some rain in afternoon.
16, Hub'd Taylor, C.Taylor & Reuben Taylor dined here. Some rain but none of them wet ground 1/2 inch. G.C.T. came home & went in evening to Col Burnley's. C.Taylor brought me a hat sent by Mr.Goodman from Fred'g made by Pearson. [Sunday]
17, Cooler than for 10 days past. Geo Petty brought me a case of Gin from Fred'g. I paid him 2/- for Carriage. I received a letter from B.Taylor which mention'd he gave 26/- for the Gin- A moderate rain in the evening and night- Reuben & Edmund Taylor came home with the boys from School.
18, C.Taylor dined here- G.C.T. came home.
19, H.Taylor sent for us, went there. Capt.[Thomas] Minor & wife were there. Uncle Taylor & wife, Maj'r Moore, Mrs Moore, Miss Polly Moore, Miss Throckmorton, J.Taylor & wife, J.Taylor jr, H.Pendleton, Reu Taylor & family dined there.
20, We went to Uncle Taylor's, Capt Minor & wife, H.Taylor & family, Reuben Taylor & do. Maj'r Moore & do. J.Taylor dined there & Rob't Taylor's family
21, We went to Maj'r Moore's- E.Taylor & family, Capt Burnley & do. Hub Taylor & do Capt Minor & do. Misses Sally & Fanny Madison & J.Taylor dined there.
22, We went to J.Taylor's (Rich'd & Colby with us) Uncle Taylor & family, John Taylor, Wm.Gilbert, Maj'r Moore & family, Ch's Taylor, Reu Taylor, Hub Taylor, Capt Minor, Capt Burnley, T.Barbour and their families, Miss Betsy Buckner dined there- Mr. Goodlet said he should keep school, but did not send the boys.
23, [Sunday] Dined at home- Had first Indian peas.
24, Went to Court, paid Mr.Goodwin 6 Dollars for a hat he got of Person for me- Paid R.Barbour, D.S., £10.19.5-£8.17.5. for Taxes & 42/- in part of Levies &c for G.Taylor. 4/5 of this C.Taylor paid for G.T.
25, Walked to Court and dined at Wood's- G.Taylor did not go- Capt Conway called here in evening & C.Taylor & eat some Watermelons.
26 Walked to Court & ret'd to dinner. G.Taylor dined at Capt Burnley's- fine rain at night. Reu Taylor called in rain but did not stay long.
