[150]11 DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1790, 1790, May,
28 Negro George ret'd home from Caroline last night. My father walked to C.Taylors & returned to dinner. We had peas for the first time, A little rain & cloudy evening.
29, Cloudy night, some rain fell & continued cloudy all day, with small rain- M.Perry says he planted 30 Thousand-
30, [SUNDAY] Cloudy damp morning, with some rain, misty all day.
31, My father & I went to the funeral of Mr.John Bell at his father's, about 20 or 30 persons present. My father came to Uncle Taylor's & dined. I dined at Mr.Bell's- Reuben Taylor came by with me & I gave him some Garden peas to plant. Tavener Jones brought from Fredericksburg my Trunk, Linens &c. Keg rum, 2 scythes, Rolls, Linen & Cards for G.Taylor & a Box for Rob't Taylor. I paid for bringing my father's & my goods 7/6, 3/9 of which my father repaid me.
June,
1, I rode to Davis's shop, had the Shoes taken off my mare all round & had a new pair put on her fore feet- Also had a Gulley plate put in my saddle, for which Davis charged 1/6 & 2/-. Bro'r James was here in evening.
2, John Taylor came by the Office & here to Breakfast, My father & I went w'th him to his father's. Capt Burnley & family, James & Charles Taylor dined there- I p'd Jn Taylor 10/- for 2 pair brown thread hose he bought for me.
3, Rained before day & rainy morning- and rainy all day tho' moderate. John Taylor, Capt Burnley, John Pendleton, James & Charles Taylor dined here. Sent the boys to School- they came back and said nobody was there.
4, Cloudy day- I went with my father to J.Taylor's. J.Pendleton & family, Misses Caty & Joanna Pendleton were there- Thunder & rain (a smart shower) after sunset
5, Cleared in last night- This a fine day- G.Taylor rode to M.Perry's, by C.Taylor's to Rob't Taylor's who came up with his family yesterday from Caroline. G.Taylor dined there & returned by the Court house. Rob't Taylor's Box of Goods was carried home by his negro Peter. Planted Irish Potatoes in the garden
6, Reuben Taylor dined here. Rainy evening with some thunder &c- [SUNDAY]-
7, Fine day. I am rather more unwell than usual- Dined at home with my father. After dinner I went to School house and by J.Taylor's. J.Pendleton & family, T.Barbour & do. & Two Miss Pendletons at J.Taylor's. M.Perry bro't me a bit from D.Davis' to cut buttons.
8, Sent 3 Bushels wheat to mill- Hear that Rob't Taylor's youngest child died last night. a very few drops of rain. Replanted Melons in garden.
9, G.Taylor went to Rachel's house to see Sary-sick. He went from there to C.Taylor's-who sent word taht J.Taylor & family wou'd dine at his house. I went over & carried 1 ps Nankeen, Linen &c for Mrs Steward to make Jacket & Breeches for me. J.Taylor & son James- J.Pendleton & family, Miss Pendletons & Nancy Taylor dined at C.Taylor's. My father let me have a ps Nankeen, 12/6- I let him have 1 ps 4/4 Linen No 5 Cost 23d Sterling pr yard at 3/10 currency.
10, J.Taylor, J.Taylor jr. Jno Pendleton & the boys from J.Taylors, & Ch's Taylor dined here. My father invited the women but they did not come. A heavy rain fell in the afternoon.
11, Cloudy morning and a few drops rain- Mr.Goodlet went home yesterday so that the boys did not go to school to day. G.Taylor rode to M.Perry's, to J.Taylors Court house, C.Taylor's and returned to dinner.
12, Rained much last night and some to-day, weather very wet, in evening I went to J.Taylor's, got E.Pendleton to take 10 1/2 yds 7.8 Linen to carry to Aunt Thomas
13, [SUNDAY] I rode with my father to Uncle Taylor's. Rob't Taylor's child was huried, a few of the neighbors were there- Maj'r Moore & son William, Rob't Taylor & family, Mrs Dandridge, Capt Burnley & family- C.Taylor, Reuben Taylor my father & myself dined there- some rain.
14, Fair weather. The boys went to School but the Master did not meet. George, Frank, & boys after dinner cut some grass seed in J.Taylor's Meadow- Frank cut his thumb- I rode to Court house- saw Harry Bell there- I got my Jacket & Breeches made by Mrs Stuart.
