14[153] DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1790, 1790, July,
20, Reuben Taylor called here. I went with him to Maj'r Lee's & bought sundry articles- M. Taylor came back & dined here- Had Cucumber seed planted in borders of square Left of the Gate.
21, I went to Hyde's Store, exchanged 3 yards Cloth I bought there, for sundry things. Mr. Hyde gone to Fredericksburg- I went to Capt Conway's to dinner, Reuben Taylor & wife, C.C. Taylor, Mrs. Ch's Thornton, were there- Gibson at work there- the youngest child unwell.
22, Staid at Capt Conway's with the above till after dinner, when Reu Taylor, his wife, C.C.T. & myself came home- Mr. Wm Taliaferro & Mr. T. Holloway dined there to day. With a Drag was caught a pretty good dish of fish.
23, Reu Taylor called here on his way to store, said L. Battaile would dine him to day & asked us to do so- My father, C.C. Taylor, myself, J. Taylor & T. Barbour jr, L. Battaile & wife, Mrs. F. Taliaferro & Miss Betsy Talaiferro dined there. My father hurt his leg against a gate very much as he went- Warm weather.
24, I went to Court house where a sale was advertised of Col. Spencers property. He replevied. I ret'd in evening & dined at home, C. Taylor called to see my father's leg. Weather warm & dry.
25, [SUNDAY] Uncle Taylor dined here.
26, C.C. Taylor & I went to Court, my father did not, being confined with his sore leg- Capt Conway & C. Taylor came by & I went with them to Court. I lent Capt Conway a half Joe, 8pw. 22 gr John Taylor & family & Wm Gilbert came from Rockingham.
27, I went with C.C. Taylor to Uncle Taylor's. Capt Burnley & family, J. Taylor & do. John Taylor & do., Mrs. Dandridge, Wm Gilbert & Jas Bell dined there. Rec'd a letter from Col. T. Barbour to len Int Warrants, but being from hone, did not send them by his boy.
28, Weather very dry- It was cloudy yesterday & last night, a few small drops of rain fell yesterday but not enough to do good. Sowed Turnep seed in flax patch yesterday- I also yesterday rec'd 20 lb Coffee of Rob't Taylor & paid him 25/6 for the same & carriage- J. Taylor, C. Taylor, Reu Taylor & J. Taylor jr was here in evening, the latter staid till next morning after breakfast.
29, C.C. Taylor set off to Caroline. I sent £37.15.11 Int Warrants by C. Taylor to Col. T. Barbour, but he did not see him & brought them back.
30, I dined at Capt Burnley's- Uncle Taylor, Rob't Taylor, Maj'r Moore & their families & Mrs. Dandridge there. Sowed Turnep seed in the rows where the peas grow. Col'o T. Barbour's son James went to Capt Burnley's & I let him have in a letter to his father, Interest Warrants to amount to £ 37.15.11, which he had wrote me to send him & acco't for at next Court.
31, J. Taylor came here after breakfast but did not stay long. Lent John Taylor my old saddle bags, saddle & bridle, he intends down the Country to-morrow- C. Taylor and I rode to Court house, ret'd to dinner.
August,
1, Cloudy and a few drops of rain. J. Taylor & family, C. Taylor, Reu Taylor & Maj'r Moore dined here- I went int he morning to Peach Orchard but found none. [SUN]
2, Rained a little last night & began in the morning from the N. East and rained very fast tho' moderate all day.
3, Rained a little last night, some moderate showers to day, in the whole a delightful seasonable shower. J. Taylor walked here but did not stay long.
4, C. Taylor has attended contantly twice a day to dress my father's leg. I went home with him after brakfast and carried to Mrs. Steward to make me a Summer coat [ +stuff] Maj'r Moore & family were at C. Taylor's & I staid till evening The weather warm & clear. Heard that Jon'n Taylor & family had got to Kentucky
5, Capt Burnley came here early and C. Taylor, who had been to court house got here & they breakfasted. C. Taylor came by about noon & we walked to Capt Burnley's who had some horses of J. Bell's dec'd appraised to £46. J. Taylor, Capt Herndon Maj'r Moore, Capt Scott & J. Barbour, Shf. dined there. I paid Z. Herndon 6/- for 150 f't plank-50 of it was for G. Taylor.
