Strother & Madison were elected- Reu Taylor brought Direction [sic] pourds & I put letters on them, G.Taylor went to ColAlcocks & returned to dinner. ColAlcock agreed to take a quarter of Calf to be killed tomorrow- 22, My father taken very unwell- C.Taylor called here & saw him, brother James & Reuben were here but staid but little. Jas Bell, Henry Pendleton & J.Taylor came here but went hunting. Killed the yearling calf and sent Col.Alcock a hind quarter, 38 lb. Ch's Taylor had a fore Quarter 34 lb, he paid 6/- and the balance given him- The other fore Quarter was given to brothers James & Reuben. One hind Quarter we kept at home. 23, Rained a little in morning, bror's James & Charles came here early, the latter breakfasted & dined here- My father continues unwell- Joshua Fry dined here- J.Taylor jr & Jas Bell called here on their way to Maj'r Moore's- Planted sweet potatoes. 24, [SUNDAY] Rained a little in morning- Bro's Jas. & Charles breakfasted here- My father is better this morning- James Taylor & son & H.Pendleton dined here. Some refreshing showers afternoon. 25, My father well enough to go to the Election, it being a fine day. Barbour & Davis Elected. Barbour had 220, Davis 212, Ben Johnson 192, Capt Conway who did not set up, about 100 votes- There was a great many people at the election Col.W.White, Col.Campbell and Mr.E.S.Thomas(of Kentucky) came w'th us from Court. 26, We went again to Court. One Douglass was tried for Stealing a Bed &c from Col.T.Barbour and sent to further trial- I put my Certificates for Nine Hundred & odd pounds into the hands of Mr.Isaac Davis Sen'r (who intends to Richmond) for the purpose of getting Warrants for the interest due on them for last year, and he promised to send them to our next Court. I bought a Vest pattern & got A.Holmes to take to make it. 27, Dry & warm weather. We went to J.Taylor's, C.Taylor & family & Mrs Stuart dined there. J.Taylor informed that a Mr.Snodgrass had applied to day to get School & was gone to see other neighbors. 28, G.C.Taylor set off to Fredericksburg. Mr.W.Taylor & Reuben Taylor intends down with him. J.Taylor, Maj'r Moore & Mr.Snodgrass was here on their way to Schoolhouse where I went with them. Mr Shepherd, Mr T.Bell, Capt Burnley & C.Taylor's met there and agreed to Employ Mr Snodgrass and give him £20. & his board to teach till Christmas- Maj'r Moore and C.Taylor came here and dined. 29, Went with my father to Court house, this being Gen'l Muster to day-but no muster. I went with Francis & William Madison & Rob't Taylor to Col Madison's W.Madison's wife & family, Rob't Taylor's wife & Mrs Macon were there. Two Lunsdens plaistering &c. 30, Rained a very little and some distant thunder- Maj'r A Madison & Capt F.Cowherd dined at Col.Madisons, after dinner I came-G.C.Taylor ret'd home. May, 1, [SUNDAY] I went to Cinch-hall to C.Porter's funeral. Mess'rs Tatum & Fry preached. A large Congregation- Uncle Taylor came home with me- immediately after we got in a fine shower of rain fell- negro George taken sick. 2, I walked to Schoolhouse- Mr.Snodgrass began to teach, about 10 scholars- Bro'r James was there & came by to get Pompoin seed- Capt Burnley had been here. Sent my Small mare to Maj'r Moore's horse, the horse was not at home-but Peter came here with him and the mare did not take him. 3, Went to Uncle Taylor's- who had sent to inform us John Taylor was there- Maj'r Moore & family, dined there. G.C.T. staid at E.T's. 4, Mr.John Cowherd came here to look at Vestry Book and staid till evening. Had a swarm of Bees. Planted forward Cucumber in bed between Peas and house- White, in bed North of Peas, and common in South & East beds of 'Sparagus. W.Melon all of one sort(H.Battaile's)
