23 [211] DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1792, 1792, October, 13, Reuben Taylor was here to breakfast, also J.Taylor. I went with the latter to Mr Hyde's, came back to Cook's, where a shooting for Beef was expected but was none. Reu Taylor was there and we came off about 3 o'clock. I bought a few trifles at Hyde's, and J.Taylor settled for leather he had dressed there- Mr.T.Bell dined at my father's, was here when I got home- C.Taylor called here ret'g from Co't house. My father continues much the same. 14, [SUNDAY] C.Taylor came here to breakfast, he G.C.Taylor & I went to Church. Mr Fry read morning service & Mr.Balmain preached- a small audience. Capt Conway came here with C.Taylor from Church and dined- G.C.Taylor dined at Maj'r Moore's Mr Shepherd & J.Taylor came in the evening to see my father, who does not seem to get any better. 15, Rained a little about day, warm and cloudy. J.Taylor & John Pendleton was here in the morning. I had walked out, they went away before I returned. C.Taylor came here and went back after breakfast- G.C.Taylor walked home with him. Evening smoky- My father continues poorly. After dinner I went to C.Taylor's and carried Linen &c to get 6 shirts made- G.Taylor was gone to the Store. 16, James & C.Taylor breakfasted here, My father does not appear to mend- moderate weather- Uncle Taylor, Ch's Taylor and Reuben Taylor dined here, J.Taylor here in the evening. 17, Slight frost and moderate weather. My father appeared rather worse from his complaining than for two or three days past, but seems rather easy this morning. C.Taylor was here in the morning. J.Taylor after breakfast & in evening- Maj'r Moore, Reu Taylor, Rob't Taylor, dined here- Capt Burnley was here after breakfast but did not stay long- J.Taylor & C.Taylor was here in the evening. 18, Cloudy with a little rain before noon. C.Taylor came by, borrowed my father's horse, I rode with him to Nooe's: Barbour, Webb & the Com'rs met but did not make a conclusion of the business- My father continues nearly as for several days. Uncle Taylor & James Bell dined here but were gone before I got home. 19, Mrs James was here and wanted to settle with my father and to pay him some bonds &c towards what she owes him, but my father's illness caused it to be put off. I rode to Howard's & to Smith's stores & bought a few trifles- I returned home to dinner- Mr.T.Bell and wife dined here to day. G.Taylor called here in evening going to A.Madison's. Capt Burnley was here an hour in evening. Ground frozen this morning, fine day. 20, My father continues near as of late-very weak. I killed 2 Squirrels yesterday & 4 to day, all young but one. J.Taylor was here after breakfast- C.Taylor called here about noon returning from A Madison's. A little rain about 12 o'clock, cloudy even'g & warm. 21, [SUNDAY] A little rain before day- Windy & Smoky & cooler- My father in more pain to day than since his forst attack, which continued till midnight, when he seemed a little relieved- Uncle Taylor, J.Taylor, Reu Taylor dined here- Bro'r James's & Charles's wives & Miss M.Conway, Capt Burnley, Rob't Taylor, Mr A.Shepherd & son William, were here to see my father Ch's Taylor was here most of the day and staid with my father- Frank slept in the room to attend on my father. 22, My father is easier this morning- Bro'r James was here very early and went back- G.Taylor went home to breakfast- I went to Court, gave a letter to a young man for Mess'rs Blair's to send Negro's cloathing for my father. C.Taylor came by and went to Court. He, Reuben Taylor & Capt Burnley called and dined in the evening- I sat up till toward morning with my father at night. 23, My father continues very ill, weak and low. J.Taylor & C.Taylor was here- Col Madison & Maj'r Madison & C.Taylor dined here- Reuben Taylor was here in evening staid to set up with my father- Benj'a Taylor came here in evening, told me Mr Bond had lost the letter for Mr.Blair. Borrowed Uncle Taylor's Chair & Close stool for my father. Paid Tom for close stool box 3/- 24, I wrote another letter for Mess'rs Blairs to send to my father some negro cloathing &c. G.C.Taylor rode to Court house and gave the letter to Jos Clark, who was on his way to Fredericksburg. Uncle Taylor & C.Taylor dined here- Reu Taylor went home after breakfast. My father continues very weak and low. C.Taylor staid with him to night. Capt Burnley called here on his return home f'm C. house.
