3 revisions | michellezitney at May 21, 2020 06:36 PM 2006, [194] DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1792, 1792, March, 14, Mr.A.Downey sent his waggon here last night, also a Jug with 4 Gallons Whiskey- his Waggon carried back 30 Bushels Rye- my father went to Quarter and saw it delivered- He came by C.Taylor's and got hom to dinner. I planted in the Pen behind the garden, Peach, Apricot and a few Damson Kernels- the two rows next the Garden good kinds of Latter peaches- 3d row the Apricots- and two rows beyond the Division good midling peaches. 15, Began to snow before day with wind Northwardly-snowed fast but very moist, it covered the ground and in some places an inch or two deep-changed about noon to fine rain mixed with snow till night. Reuben Taylor came here before noon and got sundry kind of Garden seed & returned home. 16, Snowed fine snow all night, ceased about 6 o'clock in the morning but contimued dark & cloudy till evening. I rode with my father to Howard's Store, Howard had promised to pay off Wm Taylor's bond for Maj'r Langham but having only about £40. mostly silver, my father concluded to defer receiving it till he could pay the whole, as he wanted the money to send by Jno' Taylor to pay his bond to Mr.Gabriel Jones. My father & I came by Uncle Taylor's, dined there- John Taylor got to his father's in even'g from Fredericksburg- My father asked him & father to dine with him tomorrow, but they said would not suit and asked us to dine with them. The snow covered the ground about 2 inches in the morning, but thawed a good deal by night. 17, Smart Frost, the ground raised and the snow crusty, fine morning- day something cloudy but the greatest part of the snow melted. My father went to Uncle Taylor's. I went to Court house, saw Wm Bell at Mr Shepherd's yesterday and to day James Taylor was at Court house, we came to Uncle Taylor's- C.Taylor and Mr [Charles Pitt] Howard were there to dinner. Rob't Taylor's wife was there in evening. Jno' Taylor & family there- 18, Began to rain very early in the morning and rained moderately till afternoon, then dark cloudy & foggy till night- very little snow seen here. -[SUNDAY]- 19, Cloudy but no rain. I rode to Court house, on my return met Reu Taylor who came back with me, after dinner I went with him to Mr.Shepherd's, he went by Maj'r Moore's & I came home- Cut Privet twigs and planted in our yard- Snow quite gone about here. 20, Rained last night with lightning- Cleared before day and a fine day after. Uncle Taylor and Capt Burnley dined here. 21, A few clouds this morning and cool but nothing fell. I grafted the nursery 4 first in North end the next to farthest row of Uncle Taylor's pears by corn-house- 3 in South end his sort pears by cellar- All the middle of Maj'r Moores Winter pears- Grafted on and about the old stump of Apple Tree some of Uncle Taylor's foward and other pears. 22, The Earth frozen pretty hard and White frost this morning- Roger Bell was here & got some Hemp for J.Taylor- and Wm Leathers 3 1/2 lb for Capt Burnley. Went with my father to Court house- There was a called Court for trial of Tho's Jones negro for breaking Col.Campbell's meat house and Stealing Bacon &c- He was whipped- It was supposed one Works (in Albemarle) was concerned. Mrs Moore sent and got some Garden seeds by old Joe. Sowed Peas 8 rows of the common & 2 pieces of rows latter- 23, I took dose Salts- My father rode to Quarter, came by C.Taylor's and home to dinner-Cloudy- a few drops rain in afternoon. 24, Smart rain last night, warm & little cloudy morning- Syl went with a led horse to Albemarle for G.C. Taylor who came down in evening. I went on the Mountain and got some Quince scions w'ch had planted out in old Apple Nursery. J.Taylor jun'r was here when I got back- but went home. My father & i went to J.Taylor's T.Barbour & family got there to Dinner from Culpeper. A very little rain- 25, [SUNDAY] C.Taylor came here and dined- After dinner J.Taylor, J.Taylor jr & T.Barbour came & staid till evening. Cloudy to day with a light mist.
