6 [228] DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1794, 1794, March, 7, Cloudy morning, warm eith a little rain, Sunshine & clouds- cooler in evening, frosty morning- Reuben Taylor called here before noon & said was going to hunt for wild Turkeys. Wm Edwards sent me a Rock fish. Charles Dicken son came here in evening. Rec'd Rob Thomas's Waggon 8 1/2 lb Soal leather from B.Hyde's. 8, Clear moderate day, some wind- frost. Cha's Dickinson produced his acco't for work done for my father, which we adjusted- a balance appeared in favour of him £7.0.8.- he is to prove the acco't and I promised to pay at April Court. Wm. Edwards was here with a letter from Mr.Fra Taliaferro about paying for his land &c. W.Edwards & C.Dickinson dined here. 9, C.Dickinson set off home after breakfast- I went to James Taylor's- Reu Taylor dined there. Mrs Gaines came there in the evening. Last night clear- smart frost cloudy day. ---[SUNDAY]--- 10, A very little rain last night- Find mild day. Wild Geese flying Northward yesterday & last night. Killed small Beef- Sent a fore & a hind Quarter to Z.Nooe 103 lbs- and got 8 gallons Cyder. I was at Court house- left 1/4 yard Linen at Doolins for stays to Coat. Heard War was expected soon by Great Britain against America ret'd to dinner. Hung the Pork Salted 1, February- Wild hogs. Cut & Salted the Beef I kept- Sent a piece to Macon Biggers & one to W.Edwards. 11, Great White Frost, Fair morning, hazy evening- J.Taylor sent for me, I went to breakfast. Jno Pendleton was there on his way to Richmond, got him to carry my certificates to draw int Warrants for 1793. J.Taylor paid me 5 Guineas, 26 pw 14 gr- 7.1.9. I returned home Bottled 31 Bottles of cyder of Nooe. After dinner I went to where the people were burning a plant patch & came home by C.Taylor's 12, Very warm, a little smoky. Sowed Cabbage, Lettuce &Onion seeds in Plant patch below M.Biggers's burnt last night. Maj'r Moore, John Moore, Hay Taliaferro, J.Taylor, C.Taylor, Reu Taylor, Gab'l Barbour & J.Taylor jr., dined here- 13, Warm morning, cloudy evening and cool. Sowed peas- 9 rows next Garden gate of the common kind, 5 next Marrowfat, or Non-pareil, & 2 next Stable, Bunch or Dwarf. 14, Cloudy last night & to day- with a little rain. 15, Rained last night & before noon, good evening. I rode to Court house- Called Court on trial of Burnley's Lewis- He was only whipped. I paid And'w Shepherd, Shepherd & Day's account (for Smith's work) agst G.Taylor's estate 3/7- Paid Jenkins for 5 lb Loaf Sugar 9/3. Called by Doolins & brought home Coat he made. John Pendleton called here on his return from Richmond. He brought my Certificates he carried down tuesday last, informed me he drew the warranst due for last year, and sold them £54.6.5 14/- in the pound, amounting to £38.0.6. which sum he paid to me. He also brought an answer to a letter sent A Dunscomb He got here a little before sunset & went to J.Taylor's. After dark shot at a flock of wild geese but they were too far to kill. 16, Sunday, Fine warm day. I went to J.Taylor's- John Pendleton & C.Taylor dined- James & Nancy from home. 17, Fine weather- good plowing on upland. I walked to Court house- bo't 1/2 doz Cups & Sawcers, returned by Doolings- got a few scraps, got home to dinner. Began to plow Young black mare- She plows well and soberly. 18, Fine weather. Henry Mitchel got Licence to Marry Molly Lucas, daughter of Wm.Lucas jr (the latter was present) they had been to J.Taylor's he and son were from home. Alex'r Shepherd was here after dinner. I gave him Cabbage, Beet & Onion seeds. I trimmed Apple & Peach Nursery. Had 'Sparagus bed Hoed & Manured. Sowed Cabbage, Turnep & Lettuce seeds in it. 19, Cloudy- a few drops rain afternoon. William Edwards came before breakfast & paid £39.13.0. in part of his bond for Land- Macon Biggers was present- I gave rec't for above. Had some beds burnt, joining Asparagus, & sowed Cabbage, Onion, Lettuce Radish & Mountain Cresses seed in them. 20, Very warm sunny morning, clouds & some drops of rain in evening- planted Apple & peach trees where missing in Orchard, Walked to J.Taylor's in evening- John & Rob't Moore came there with J.Taylor jr after I was there.
