DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1796,

March
2, Snowed before day & very fast some hours after but was moist and about 2 inches
Cloudy all day, driping rain. C. Taylor sent his boy for butter. I sent him 6 1/2 lb.
I walked to C. Taylor's he was gone from home to see some of Reu Moore's
family - William Taylor & his wife [Susan H. Gibson -WKA-], dined at C. Taylor's.
I rec'd a letter dated Feb'y __ from *F.S. Taylor desiring me to inform him if
I could advance money to him to enter into partnership in the Brewing business
[*Francis Stubbs Taylor, son of Edmund & nephew of Diarist. -WKA]
3, Rained brisk before day - ice on trees - Cloudy soft day. Reuben Taylor came by -
went by C. Taylor's and from thence to Mr. Benj'a Porter's and examined his Executor account for his father's estate- Mr. A'n Shepherd was appointed but did
not meet- Robert Taylor, Pearce Sanford and Abner Porter were there- we finished
examining and made our Report and came away about an hour by sun in evening-
I kept the account. Heard that*Mr. T. Bell died yesterday. James Coleman
(by the Springs) & Wm Quarles in Louisa on Monday last. [*Thomas Bell md.
Elizabeth Taylor, dau, of Zachery and 1st cousin of Diarist. -WKA-]
4, Some clouds- Moderate fair evening. I took a dose of Castor oil and staid at
home. I dug a small basket Irish potatoes, mostly sound.
5, Smart frost- clouds, moderate. J. Taylor sent for some butter & 4/-, I had only
3 lb butter to spare which I sent & kept the 4/- w'ch balanced accounts. I rode
to Mr. Shepherd's- paid him 1/- for postage on F.S.T.'s letter- He said my
smith's acco't was £3.0.4. & that he would deduct 13/4 from it for corn John
Brent had. I deferred to settle Till I get a copy of account. J. Taylor was
there, we came away together. I came home.
6, Sunday, Some clouds early- Fair mild day. I went to Sermon by Mr O'Neil at
Court house. Paid Garde for Soaling Shoes 1/3- G. Barbour said I might. I came
home & walked to C. Taylor's to dinner. William Taylor & wife & Allan Massey
were there. C. Taylor had been in Madison- got home just after dinner. I met
Caty Nooe going to C. Taylor's as I came away.
7, Some clouds- Windy evening and cool. I had some cabbages set out for seed. Cut the roots off. Zachariah Herndon jun'r came here- I paid him a dollar for 4
Pine trees- C. Leathers got on his father's land to make paling.
8, Cold wind last night, began to snow and continued till near noon- 6 or 7 inches
deep. Fair afternoon, cold. I was alone all day. rather unwell.
9, Hard frost- half the snow melted, clear day, hazy evening. Staid at home. A. Young Sow had 6 pigs & all died.
10, Sharp frost, cloudy morning, some spits round snow. Cleared with South wind & most of snow disappeared by night. J. Taylor jr wrote about 12 o'clock to ask me
to dinner. I went over- Wm Dade, W. Edwards & Jos Clark were there & had been
processioning- C.P. Howard & Maj'r Moore also dined there. J. Taylor went to
Fred'g yesterday. I did not see his wife, she being unwell.
11, Cloudy morn. Fair pleasant day. The White (largest) sow had 10 pigs this morning. I was not well, and at home all day. Plowing afternoon- this is only the third time.
12, Fair, pleasant day. I rode to Court house, got my mare Shod- Settled my account with A Shepherd for Smith's work & received a balance from him 58/6 in my favor for wheat sold him. Nimrod Long presented two orders, one from *Edmund H. Taylor, the other from+Reuben Eastin for #Thruston Taylor, sons of = Edm'd Taylor deceased, for their proportions £9. each of the Legacy of G. Taylor, dec'd. the orders were drawn in favour of Charles Thruston, who assigned them to be paid to James McDonald, who desired me to pay them to the said Nimrod Long. I paid him £18. p/r Receipt. Reuben Taylor came here from Court house, also Rob't Cawthon, the latter called on Mr. Howard & got dinner. Reu Taylor & N. Long dined here- In evening the latter went to see J. Taylor on business in the Office & came back at night. Another young sow had 6 pigs.
