22 (307) DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1796, 1796, October, 8, Some Clouds-moderate. I walked to Court house- Petty Muster. Saw Col. J. Barbour. Bought 1/4 lb Tea of Barbour's Ret'd home to dinner. Had a little Wheat sown in Plant patch. Took a Plank hive of bees- Not much honey, got a sting on my tongue, very painful. 9, A little frost- pleasant day. I walked to J. Taylor's- he & Nancy came from Culpeper yesterday- I dined there- J. T. jr & wife at Maj'r Moore's- In evening I walked to Aunt Taylor's- got 2 shoe knives of C. P. Howard. Rob't Taylor's wife &c & Sally Burnley there. Rob't Taylor got there from Frederick'g, said yung E. Pendleton's wife died two days ago. --- [SUNDAY] --- 10, Cloudy all day, no rain. Had a Wether killed- sent a side, 32 lb to Gab'l Barbour gave M. Biggers a piece. Let Sary have 5 1/2 yds German Ozna' & thread to make Shirts for 3 of Eliza's children. 5 3/4 yds for Sary's children. Let Frank have some twilled V. Cloth & went with him to C. Taylor's & got Sister Taylor to cut a Stable Jacket- C. Taylor was from home- I returned to dinner. I walked to J. Taylor's in evening- Capt R'd Barbour & wife- Capt J. Moore- J. Taylor jr & wife & E. Chew there. Davy began to make shoes. I paid Sally Taylor a dollar for making Jacket & let her have another dollar & Betsy one. 11, Cloudy weather continues without rain. Sent to Gabriel Barbour by Negro George One Gammon and one Shoulder, 26 lb Bacon. Being not well I staid at home- Did intend to Gordon's. A Sale of Daingerfield's Slaves was advertised to be there to day- but expect it did not take place. Got about a peck of Chestnuts to day. 12, Cloudy morn & mist, clearer afternoon. I am more unwell than common. Wm Garde sent 2/- p/r boy & got 2 lb butter. I walked in evening to J. Taylor's- Only he & wife, E Chew, and children, at home. 13, A little fine rain in morning, cleared in evening. I took a dose Salts. Chs Bell came here & informed me he shou'd set off this even'g for Rockingham. I let him have a dollar to get me 1/2 pound of Powder & Saltpetre. he b't 1 lb Powder 5/- & ret'd 1.- the 21st. I walked to C. Taylor's in evening- gave him mem'dm to get me some things- Sally Burnley there & going with Girls to races. 14, Fog, warm, clouds & Sunshine. I walked to Court house- got Newspaper. Paid J. Taylor jr 1/3 he paid Wm Beck for bringing up leather, some young men at G. Barbour's- I was asked to dine there & at Mr Shepherd's but came home. My nephews Edmund & Richard Taylor got to my house soon after & dined- Said Kentucky friends were well. C. Taylor came & staid ab't 2 hours. [Named for their fathers] 15, Saturday, Misty or small rain most of the day. Edmund Taylor, R'd Taylor & self went to C. Taylor's to Breakfast. Bro'r James was here before we went. C. Taylor his daughters, Sally & Betsy & Sally Burnley set out about 10 o'clock going to John Gibson's on their way to the races- I went with Nephew to J. Taylor's to dinner. Doct'r Barbour, Capt John Moore & three Miss Barbours there. J. T.'s wife & E. Chew- J. Taylor jr gone to Court martial at Nooe's- We came back at night. I had a fore tooth drawn by C. Taylor while I was there. 16 [SUNDAY] Rained a good deal last night, cloudy morn, fair even, windy. E. & R'd Taylor packed their clothes (which had washed yesterday) and I went with them to Reuben Taylor's to dinner. They intend down tomorrow- J. Taylor, J. Taylor jr, Wm Moore & Rob't Moore were at Reu Taylor's. 17, Fair and pleasant, moderate but coller than for some days- Mrs Gilden and daughter came here to breakfast. I let her have 4 lb Stocking yarn, which is to be knit for my negroes. 18, Some frost- Fair till evening, a little hazy. Had Bacon sunned, 14 new, 2 old Gammons, 9 Shoulders & 10 Mig'gs. Had Walnuts gathered. M. Biggers riving slabs 19, Wednesday, Fog in morn. Warm fair evening. I staid at home. Maj'r W. Lindsay & Doct'r ___ Morrow came here in evening returning from Staunton where they had been for health. 20, Fog in morn- fair pleasant after. Maj'r Lindsay & Doct'r Morrow staid to day- I sent for bro'r James, who came to dinner- He said his family went to day to T. Barbour's, whose wife was lately delivered of a daughter.
