DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1787,

22, [Sunday] Rained a little last night, I went to Church. Mr Waddill not there. G.Taylor went to J.Taylors and when I returned from Church I went there and dined.
23, Went to Court. C.Porter told me the Warrants I sent him the 15th he had made use of. There fell a very good rain, more than at any time since May-
24, Went to Courthouse was on an Arbitration with ColJ.Barbour, Mr A.Shepherd & Capt Conway, between W.Webb vs John Daniel. Vivian Webb vs the same for slander. John Daniel vs W.Webb, two suits which the Arbitraters determined amongst themselves, but did not publish their award. They were of opinion the suits of Will'm Webb & John Daniel were malicious and vexatious, and that they ought to be dismist at the Def'ts Cost. And that Vivian Webb being a young man of good character that the Def't Daniel ought to pay £20. Damages. The suits Webb vs Daniel was in Gen'l Court & Daniel vs Webb in Orange- the contending parties gave bonds to stand to & abide the Arbitration. They paid for the dinners of the Arbitrators & about 15 witnesses. Ch's Dickinson & Rich'd Luck, his apprentice, came here at night to supper.
25, Cloudy but no rain Jos Clark sowed Turnep patch, upper part with seed from Col.Madisons, Lower part with seed from Capt Scotts- Got the Bricks drawn up and made up some Mortar. Luck took a vomit, and Mr.Dickinson complains of a sore leg & did not work today.
26, Luck took a purge- Set the Kiln to burn Oyster shells- very cool.
27, Burnt oyster shells-Mr.Dickinson went to Capt Burnleys to dinner. N.Porter jr was there in morning & talked to me about an Interest Warrant, I did not let him have it- J.Pendleton was here in afternoon & said his brother H.Pendleton &c went this morning to Culpeper. Weather coll & very dry & windy.
28, Mixed the Oystershells to make white wash-very cool & clear morning, clouded about 9 o'clock. G.Taylor went before & Ch Dickinson & F.T. after dinner to Co'thouse. Five playing-but no shooting match.
29, [Sunday] C.Dickinson & self went to Church. The Rev'd Mr Balmain preached-G.Taylor dined at J.Taylors-I dined at home with Mr.Dickinson & his apprentices- The Negroes had a Funeral over old Judy & Betty. Smart Shower of rain in Evening- and another in the night.
30, Mr.Dickinson went to work on Pillars of Portico &c G.T. & F.T. went to James Taylors to dinner. Uncle Taylor, Capr Burnley, Mr.Balmain & their wives, Zach Taylor, Miss Nancy Bell & Miss Jane Taylor were there.
31, Cloudy morning- the weather has been remarkably cool for last week-cloudy & mist of rain yesterday- Wind Northwardly for two days. C.Dickinson mended the plastering and began the Oven yesterday-Painted the chimney where it had been drawn from the house & about the Oven, today.
August,
1, Mr. Dickinson very sick & took a vomit. Bro'r James & son dined here. And'w Bourn and Uriel Mallory came for business with J.Taylor. Capt. Burnley here after dinner. Finished the Oven.
2, Mr.Dickinson better, Began to whitewash above. G.T. & self went ot C.Taylors. Maj'r Moore & family, Uncle Taylor & do. Mrs Belmain, Capt Burnley & family, Reu Taylor & do, J.Taylor, E.Pendleton & old Capt Lee & Mrs Lee dined there After dinner H.Taylor came for C.Taylor to go to set his daughters Collar bone, broke accidentally. Mr.Dickinson went after dinner to Rob't Taylors Brick kiln.
3, Mr. Dickinson ret'd after breakfast. Went to Called Court on Jane Gillock charged with stealing meal from Bourn, the Court was divided & she acquitted Clouds and some rains in sight, very littlel here. G.Taylor dined at Maj'r Lees. I came home to din'r. Mr. Dickinson also afterwards.
4, Mr.Dickinson & self went on Mountain and got peaches. A good shower of rain in afternoon, wet about an inch.
