DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1787

20, Rainy morning which prevented my going to Culpeper Court, Hub Taylor came by on his way & went to J.Taylors & J.Pendleton went with him. Showers all day but enough rain.
21, I went to Culpeper Court, met with C.Taylor on the road, I being summoned to attend as witness in behalf of W.Thompson to prove some acco'ts on the books I kept for him, staid the 22nd, 23rd, & came away the 24th when I got home in the evening- My Expences came to 30/- exclusive of drink & my attendance came to 154 los Gross Tob'o.
[22] Mr.Edward Watkins died the 22d, [Mary, daughter of the first James Taylor,
23, married first, 1701, Henry Pendleton, b,1683, d.M 1721; she m.2nd Edward Watkins. This must be the Mr.Edward Watkins- By her first marriage, Mary Taylor Pendleton was the mother of 7 children:
1. James b.1702, d.1761, m.1727, Mrs Mary Lyall,
2. Philip, b.1704, d.1778, m. Martha _______-
3, Isabella, m. Henry Gaines,
4, Nathaniel, b.1715, d.Aug.1794, m. Mrs.Elizabeth(Clayton) Anderson.
5, Mary, b.1717, living 1891, m.James Gaines, prob, the "Mrs Gaines of the diary.

25, Dined at home with my father. J.Taylor came after & we had some Watermelons.
26, Went with G.Taylor to C.Taylors, he got home last night from Dr.Neaves & brought some directions for my disorder, which the Doct'r says is the gravel in the Kidneys, his charge was 2/6- C.Taylors family came from Capt Conways yesterday, we dined & he came with us to eat Watermelons. [Sunday]
27, It rained a good deal last night & very rainy day- We did not go to Court. Best season since March-
28, I went with G.T. to Court- the morning being wet there were not many at Court Warm and clear afternoon, The Arbitrators of the Suits between the Webbs & Daniels finished their award. Capt Conway came home with us & Hub'd Taylor called to eat Watermelon and went home after supper.
29, Went again with G.C. and G.T. to Court-Capt Walker agreed to saw for my father 4,000 feet Heart paling at 40/- Spoke to W.Gibson yesterday to make a Table 3F. 6 inches long & 16 Inch bed. Rain at night & in night moderately- Wolves killed two Sheep last night of Geo.Taylors-
30, Cloudy & rainy all day-staid at home Mr.James Blair yesterday took my watch which he promised to have repaired at Fredericksb'g.
31, Went with G.Taylor to Court- Bought of Maj'r Lee cloth for a Coat- Cloudy day and some rain-

1, Rainy all day, moderate but plenty.
2, [Sunday] Foggy morning, soon clear & fine, went with G.T. to Church, Mr Waddill preached. G.T. dined at C.Taylors, I dined at J.Taylors, no Company there.
3, Killed five squirrels before breakfast, they were in Hickory trees- Got a Bag of peaches and began to dry- My father went over the plantation at Jos Clarks and dined at home.
4, Killed 3 Squirrels, cou'd not get Basket peaches. Walked with my father in evening to J.Taylors. Reu Taylor & family dined there. The men (except J.T.) were gone to Hansfords.
5, I went with cloth &c to Holmes's to make a coat, he was gone to Mill and I rode to Howarths Store, Bought for G.T. a Knob Lock 8/9 and for self a camp kitchen 5/- Ret'd by Holmes's & home to dinner. My father dined at C.Taylors
6, We rode to Court house, got one Shoe (which I carried) put on my horse-cameback to dinner. J.Taylor jr. brought my Knife home w'ch I had lost, we cut a fine watermelon-
