[105] 18 DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1788, 1788 September, 9, Weather cleared and cooler- Uncle E.Taylor, John Taylor, Bro'rs James, Charles & Reuben, T.Barbour & Hubbard Taylor, here to Dinner who went home & returned- Killed a Lamb this morning- sent 1/4 to J.Taylor. 10, I walked to J.Taylors whowas gone from home- his family, John & H.Pendleton, T.Barbour &c were going to Mrs. Thomas's- John Taylor came by & I went to C.Taylor's with him. Reu Taylor & wife went from J.Taylors there, my father & Uncle Taylor dined there. M.Fall been there some time. J.Taylor sent p's Beef 11, I killed 2 Squirrels- weather clear & cool. J.Clark was here & breakfasted- Began to Still the 9th instant- We dined at home, C.Taylor sent word about noon that J.Taylor's family were at his house & to ask us there. Weather warm & clear- Moses finished getting pales, says 950 in the woods. 12, Negro George set off to Caroline with a led horse for G.C.Taylor [George Conway Taylor, his 1/2 brother, 19 years old-WKA], who was to leave School the 10th instant. I wrote to Ben Taylor [brother-WKA] about his land he wants to sell. Rode to the Church where Mr.Reader met about making up a Singing School: he will get about Twenty scholars- Heard Whip poor will cry 13, Went with G.Taylor by the Church where the Singing School was began by Mr.Reader & from thence to Court House to Muster. Ret'd at night to dinner. 14, [Sunday] Foggy morning, it was very foggy yesterday morning. We dined at home, after dinner G.Taylor walked to Cha's Taylors & I to J.Taylors. 15, Unwell this morning- Sent our last Corn to Mill for house- C.Taylor sent & had 6 p's Bacon 48 lb. W.Taylor, son of Jonathan Taylor (brother of the writer WKA), came here to day from his father's & went after dinner to J.Taylor's. Capt Burnley dined with us- J.Taylor came to ask me to lend him £20. Int Warrants till November, w'ch I promised him- Whilst he was here Wm. Taylor of Botetourt got here. Bro'r James returned to dinner- in evening his son James walked over & W.Taylor went home with him. 16, Rained a very little last night- J.Taylor sent here for 6 p's Bacon, 68 lb. but sent it back- did not like it. G.Taylor & I went to J.Taylor's to dinner- Ja's Gaines, his wife & daughter Nancy, Miss Garlix, Wm.Taylor, J.Pendleton, T.Barbour & their families were there- A slight shower & distant Thunder in evening- some Brandy brought from J.Clark's forty odd gallons. 17, Fine clear morning and day. Sunned the Bacon- After dinner C.Taylor & Wm Taylor [of Botetourt Co.-W.K.A.] came from C.Taylor's- 18, Had Quinces gathered. I went with G.Taylor & Wm Taylor to J.Taylors- C.Taylor & family, Uncle E.Taylor, Rob't Taylor & family dined there. Heard W poor will at night. fine weather- 19, Went with G.Taylor & Wm Taylor (son of Jonathan- WKA) to Reuben Taylors. Hub Taylor & family- Capt Burnley & Mrs Burnley, J.Taylor & son James- J.Pendleton & wife & T Barbour's wife dined there- Wm Taylor staid- I paid H.Taylor for 1/2 doz Lemons 1/6. 20, Cloudy morning & a little rain, & a little at night. J.Taylor & son, John Pendleton, Cha's Taylor & Phil Williams, who came to J.Taylor's & from thence here, dined here, also Jos Clark who has been hanging Tob'o in Stable. Wm.Taylor (of Botetourt- WKA) came from Reu Taylor's, dined at H.Taylors and got here about sunset. 21, [Sunday] We went to Church Mr. Waddill preached & after sermon told the Congregation that he had completed his 2d year. We came home & dined- Weather cool. Hear that Capt.A.Powell died last Thursday. 22, We went to Court. I rec'd a letter from Ben Taylor with his patent for 17,500 acres of Land, half of which he desires me to sell for him. G.Taylor agreed with Moses Perry to be his Overseer. We returned home to dinner. 23, W.Taylor (son of Jonathan-WKA) & self went out with gun & killed 4 Squirrels. We went to Uncle Taylor's to dinner, Mrs. Hite, Miss Sally Madison (sisters of the President-WKA), Mrs Moore, Capt Burnley, Mrs Burnley, C.Taylor dined there.
