July,
19, Our family dined at G.Taylor's. I p'd Sister Taylor for making Linen Coat & Breeches 6/- Sold old grey coat to Joe for 6/- rec'd 4/7 1/2. Weather extremely dry and nights cool. --[SUNDAY]--
20, A.Holmes sent waistcoat by M.Perry and this morning came and took the Black breeches (he made) to alter them. Sister Taylor sent home Linen Breeches. Sent some brandy to C.Taylor's & got whiskey for it.
21, Hub Taylor, J.Taylor & son, H.Pendleton & G.Taylor dined here- Heard Sawyer, or Cherry Derry-
22, Fog in morning but no rain- Had 2 chickens of Joes for dinner.
23, Had Buckwheat sown in Tob'o ground, also Oats- James & C.Taylor here in even'g
24, Davy & Jim began a ditch- H.Taylor came here to breakfast & went to Shoemakers at C.house. I walked to C house & came to J.Taylor's to dinner. My father was there- Col.Jas Barbour sent a boy with a letter & 21/8 to my father who sent him 30 lb Wool. G.C.T. went to Capt Conway's-
25, About Ditch. A shower of rain in afternoon, barely a season, but replanted old ground w'th Tob'o. There has not been as much rain at once sinc the 11th June & this did not wet above 1/2 inch-
26, [Sunday] G.T. bought 7 chickens of S.Daniel. I sold an old Shirt to Joe for 2/- he paid me 7 1/2d. Rained at 10 o'clock & continued moderate all night.
Continued very Cloudy and settled rain all day & night. C.Taylor & C.Conway called on their way to Court. G.Taylor & I being unwell & the day wet, staid at home A.Holmes and Ab Smith called here, the former brought a pair Breeches he had to alter & I paid him 10/- for making vest & Breeches. Replanting Tob'o. planted Cabbages in garden.
27, H.Chilton came from Court with an order on G.Taylor from C.Dickinson- Prettyman Merry pd £14.1.8. to J.Taylor to discharge his bond to G.Taylor. Bitch proud & cont'd till 10 Aug't.
28, J.Taylor came here in morning & brought the cash he rec'd of P.Morry which I gave G.Taylor Cr. for- J.T. left his newspapers- G.C.T. came from C.Conway's. I have been much pained with the piles for a week. C.Taylor called on his way from Pamunky & dined. He then lanced my piles which gave me much ease. Sowed the Turnep patch near gate with seed from Col.Taliaferro's & some I set last year- Cloudy till 10 o'clock this morning, then cleared.
29, Moses Perry came and had the yard plowed & part sown with grass seed. My father was very ill and had C.Taylor to administer a clyster after w'ch he was easier Bro'r James also was here-
30, Rainy. Reu Taylor sent & got cabbage plants. C.Taylor came to see my father and dined, rained all day.
31, Maj'r Moore came here & went with G.Taylor to C.Taylor's. J.Taylor & family, Capt Burnley & do. dined there. C.Taylor dig'g cellar, some rain in evening. G.C.T. set off for Caroline.
August,
1, Reu Taylor & *ColKnox came here & we went to J.Taylor's. Uncle Taylor, Capt Burnley & family and Bowie Pendleton were there. Reu Taylor went to the Sadler's & got a saddle £3. price which he let J.Taylor have. Mrs Madison very sick. [*James Knox, Captain 8th Va., Apl.4, 1776; Major 9th Va., ____ and served to _____. must have been a closefriend of the family. One of the sons of Hubbard and Clarissa (Minor) Taylor was "James Knox," and the name continues in the family till to-day-James Knox was the leader of "The long Hunters," who explored and hunted in Kentucky in 1769:70.-PFT]
2, We dined at home. I bought a Flesh-Fork, Ladle & Iron Spoon of Dade's Frank 2/6 I went to Peach Orchard & got some peaches near ripe. Had Cimblings for dinner
3, George went to J.Taylor's and got a turn of wheat and carried to Mill. I went to J.Taylor's in evening and borrowed newspapers. Mr.Goodlett not at school.
