[133] 19 DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1789, 1789 October, 14, My father, the boys & self, went to C.Taylor's, who is burning Bricks- and Raising his house. J.Taylor & family & T.Barbour's wife were there. Thunder, lightning & some rain in Evening. J.Glassell came to see the boys. 15, C.Taylor about raising his house. G.Taylor went there and from there to J.Taylor's to dinner- I went with the boys in evening to C.Taylor's 16, We dined at home in evening, I went to J.Taylor's. 17, I went with Richard & Colby & *John Glassell to the Quarter & got some Chestnuts & ret'd to dinner- Capt Burnley here in evn'g came home to day from his father J.Glassell went home- [*John, son of Andrew and Elizabeth (Taylor) Glassell, was born Oct 29, 1780, was grandson of Erasmus Taylor- PFT-] 18, [Sunday] J.Taylor & T.Barbour came here. I intended to Court House to hear a Methodist preach, but did not go. Reu Taylor also came here, he brought me some trifles he got at Fredericksburg, they dined here. 19, Boys went to school- Mr.Goodlet not there, they saw Jno.Glassell who told them that Uncle Taylor desired we would dine there- we all went, Capt Dade, his wife, Mrs.Mason & Mrs Thruston dined there. Mrs Willis & Miss N.Dangerfield came there in Evening from Spotsylvania. 20, After dinner I went to J.Taylor's. R'd Barbour, Nat Gordon & young Mr.Quarels, T.Barbour's wife were there. 21, A little rain in morning, I went with Dicky & Colby to M.Perry's after Chestnuts, we got half a bushel & ret'd about noon, My father had gone to J.Taylors & we went there to dinner- 22, Hard frost, have been cutting Oats for a week- Finished Irish Potatoes. 23, Gen'l Muster appointed. Went with my father & nephews to Court house- No roll called. Geo Shepherd &c killed a large Bear about Mr.T.Bell's last night- G.Taylor dined at Uncle Taylor's - I came home with the boys- Reu Taylor called & got a little C.Tartar for a bad cold. 24, Rained about 11 o'clock until evening but not much. 25, Fine day, C.Taylor dined with us. --[SUNDAY]-- 26, Dicky, Colby & I walked to Court- G.Taylor rode and went to C.Taylor's & Dined- Mrs Madison, Aunt Taylor & Miss Madisons (who got there to day from Caroline) were there. Turned cool & windy. John Bourn came here in the night & staid till breakfast the next day. 27, Very windy & cool- Hub Taylor was here about an hour, he got home yesterday, brought me some Cloaths for Dicky & Colby- 28, I walked after dinner to J.Taylor's. His son James went to Culpeper to Miss Pendleton's wedding- Uncle & Aunt Taylor at J.Taylor's. 29, G.Taylor went to Court house and dined at Mr.Shepherd's. Wm Ingram came to see him abt money & gave Mrs James Credit for 12/-. After dinner I went with the boys to C.Taylor's. Two Lambtons about chimney, Gibson & Moore were there- Set cabbage in rows- 30, A good rain in the night & this morning- cloudy all day. 31, Frost & ice in morning- Fine day- J.Taylor was here in morning and left some papers & key of Office, he & family going to Culpeper. H.Taylor had been to Ingrams & came by & breakfasted- G.Taylor went to Uncle Taylor's early to see John Taylor & ret'd after breakfast- Two persons wanted business in Office- Thos Bell bro't J.Taylor 2 pair small Shoes. November, 1, Ch Taylor & family dined here- fine day- J.Glassell came here. W.Ingram got a little Linseed oil for a burnt child- 2, G.Taylor set off for Caroline- T.Mallory & son came here to work- Frank sick- Col.Madison got home from Congress. 3, Rained a little last night, The weather cahnged windy & cool. T.Mallory & son went away after breakfast. Gave Frank Jallap. 4. Very cold last night and this day, and very windy- A Robinson came to get an order for building bridge.
