My own beloved Mother I had intended writing you last night but dear Father and Butler were here till [sic] bed time and B. said he was going to write you himself so I put it off till [sic] today -- After William left my precious little boy with you he came back & we got our breakfast & started down to the boat - she stoped [sic] at about a dozen places - among the rest Florence, Amboy &c none of which places though very pretty I think would have been pleasant for us to stay at - at Borden Town we took the cars (oh what a crowd) - for Amboy where we took the Steamer again for this place there were a great number of passengers among them a party of 5 ladys [sic] & 4 gentlemen in deep black two of the ladys [sic] had babys [sic] one only two weeks old & the other looked about a month they were coming on to bury their father poor things they did look miserable - The views all along are beautiful - the cars are [fixed?] with the new plan so we had no dust - & they went very

[top right] Savannah, June 4th / 53 Saturday night

My dear William

I hope you have time and patience to read a long letter, for I have so long restrained my desire to write to you, that this bids fair to test your brotherly kindness - brotherly or friendly, you have never yet failed me dear William, & my love for you & yours, is so far "perfect," that it has "cast out fear" -

Ever since I heard of your great affliction last summer, I have been thinking a great deal of you and Hannah, but it was not then I most wished to write you - What could I say to reconcile you to a blow coming from a power, to which you had never submitted myself yourself?
