New Orleans 6th Novr 1833

Dr Sir I have just time to say that the Brigg is at this time coming to Anchor on the aposide of the river the mail is about to close I have seen no person from the Brigg but presume alls well I have taken no Insurance I forwarded you by yesterdays mail check drawn by the Union Bank of this place on the Merchants Bank New York for fifteen thousand dollars will make you the particulars by the next mail.

New Orleans 5 Nov 1833 R C Ballard &Co. Sir you will herewith please receive First Check Drawn by the Cashier of the Union Bank of this place dated this day in your favour on the Cashier of the Merchants Bank New York Nr 2167 for the sum of fifteen thousand dollars I have also forward First check dated Drawn + as above Nr 2168 in favor of Franklin Armfield & Co for Twenty Thousand Dollars will forward you in a mail or two a further sum of five thousand dollars in haste as usual Isaac Franklin

Dear Ballard I reached this place yesterday and found in the post office the Invoyce & Bill of Lading for 63 Slaves together with your request what desposition I should make of some of the negroes all of which I will attend to when an opportunity offers the demand for slaves is considerable not so much with sugar planters as with the cotton planters but the invoyse price is so high that you may look out for the short profits but of

the negros are likely saleable and we will get back our capital vested and some profit but if on the contrary they are old & unsaleable they will remain on hand until next Spring & [?] Bills & funeral Expenses will take off what little we make on the right kind as this is my last effort I feel some pride in making a good return this season I have become rather dissatisfyed with myself on acct of some assurances but not as regard you I have made a Slave of myself for the benefit of others could have made if I had been selfish as much moor for myself & now it seems my good intention is construed by nephews as entirely selfish & that I am under obligations to them or at least it seems so to me but old fellow it will all be the same thing a hundred years hence Adieu Dear Ballard and believe me as usual Isaac Franklin Some say that there has been some sales at $1000 a head for men but you are well enough acquainted with the market to know that sales will be very slow indeed when at the price above cotton has declined a fraction
