Elk July 5th 1853
Col Ballard
Dear Sir I am very sorry that I
have to inform you that the cotton crop will be
very much hurt by the frequent and very
heavy rains that has fell for the
last ten days and am also sorry
the rain was too late for the corn but
have a very good corn crop I do not
think that the ground would do to
work for a week if the rain should
stop now which there no likely hood
of it quitting at this time I was more
than pleased with the cotton crop preavious
to the beginning of the rain the cotton
will all be too closed in the roes I have
not done any work in the crop for the
last four or five days but the land
that I have to deaden come in play
very well once I will finish it in a day
or two more
If the rain would now stop I have no doubt
but that I would have cotton to pick by the
first of August from the appearance
of the grown bowls now on the cotton
I have some sickness among the negroes
but not bad Respectfully yours Robert H Morgan
