Natchez 14th Dec/53

Since writing I have seen Judge Boyd he tells me that he thinks you will want 10 or 15 more females I have on hand I think 12 men but they are the kind you would not buy I know they are such as I would not buy for you although they are large most of them. I selected the lot myself that I sent you and if there is anything wrong lay it to me you cannot buy anything like a fair woman here for less than $1000. any that you would have, I know a lot of Georgia Negros at Memphis that I think you could buy the women for $900. I told the Judge if you wished me I would go up there and buy you ten or fifteen & charge you nothing but my expense I can leave Brent with my negros but I will telegraph to morrow & ascertain all about them all I would want would be a letter of credit to draw at 60 or 90 days on Nalle Cox & Co the Judge is in favour of my going if you say so Griffen sold 4 more girls this evening at $1000 not as good Polly Nickeley I sent you yours &c C.M.Rutherford

Natchez Miss Dec 14 /53 Coln R.C. Ballard

Dear Sir I wrote you that I could not trade with the Judge but we have traded subject to your examination I believe them to be all sound. warrant them so at any rate I would not have sold them at the money but I have money to pay you may think them high but they are low for the market I am satisfied you cannot buy the same negros here within $2000 of the same money the money is payable as my bills become due $8000. you are on due this month & $9000 of Conways bills due this month Conway bought 14 of the number I have on hand Now 23 more among them a fine blacksmith which I have conditionally sold at $2000. I have sold [five or six?] others since I came but recd nothing in the way of money yet & not untill January - so if you are cheated you must stand it this time for I am in a hard place & I will try & do better next time if any of them dont prove right send them back. I send you the invoice of them by Brend
