Saturday the 11th Feby 1856 Warm to day and the wind blew hard which melted the snow verry fast it is all gone except on the north hillside & shaded places the snow remained on the entire Ground for 43 days and it is not gone entirely yet my hands are splitting rails at the Jarvis place we are fencing in that plantation for a pasture for our sheep & cattle quite cold Saturday night the ground froze hard and the wind blew unusually hard all night and all day on Sunday
Wensday the 28th Feby 1856 commenced plowing for the firsting time in teh Apple Orchard for corn there is yet snow on teh north Hill Sides in places that fill the 5th Jany nearly Two months ago All the Peaches plums and cherrys are winter killed in the bud for there is no signs of the Spring yet all cold & dreary as December
Friday the 29 Feby 1856 More moderate to day the snow is all gone at last sun shines warm I sowed 2lbs spanish white wheat in my potatoe patch and 2 oz of Roland oats procured from the patent office Sowed one Bu Spring Wheat from T Glens in a cow lot north of the Barn it is a smoothe Spring Wheat
Monday the 3rd March 1856 I started to N York to bring the Spring Stock of goods quite cold
Thursday the 6th March 1856 Commenced Sowng oats in the field East of the meadow along the mud Road we are sowing all that field 40 Acres in oats & clover seed
Teusday the 11 March 1856 The old Gray mare had a mare colt to day
& the 16th of March Saturday the 23rd March 1856 Finished sowing Oats and comenced Breaking up for corn in the field south of my house I Returned from the North to day and found everything looking like winter yet no Buds or Blooms and yet during last week there was a snow storm covered the ground in deep it fell on the 16th
Thursday the 27th March 1856 Cold windy day Snowed some several times during the day cleared off at night and froze the ground we commenced planting our crop of Irish potatoes but it got too cold we stoped before we got done running 3 Turn plowing breaking corn ground all this week
28th March 1856 Planted 7 bu Irish Potatoes to day it is verry windy & cold a hard freeze last night and no signs of Spring yet
Monday the 31st March 1856 Hailed & Rained last night and this morning too it is snowing hard for four or five hours but melted as fast as it fell had it not of melted it would have been 4 or 5 in deep cleared off old in the afternoon and a hard freeze at night
April the 2nd 1856 quite cold yesterday & to day ground frozen we finished breaking our corn land to day but it is too cold to plant corn so we
10th April 1856 festival planing Irish potatoes, we planted 12 but in all the Spring is very backward the peach trees is not in Bloom yet and we set out shade trees to day we set out horse chestnuts some cherry with
Wednesday the 23 Apl 1856 Finished plantig Large field South of house in corn and listed lot of 4 or 5 Acres North [as?] Corn Crib to plant in corn Rained a fine Shower to day
Thursday the 24th April 1856 Quite cloudy this morning & looks as if it would rain We are makeing fence btween me & I bothrd putting Rocks at the bottom to keep the ground pole off the ground & get the Rocks off of the field We sent 10 head of Dry Cattle to the Germany Pastures today They are very poor and the grass short in the pasture but we cant do any better
Friday the 25th April 1856 finished planting corn to day We have manured 25 Acres in the Neill pleasant growing weather not very warm
1 May 1856 Rained a light shower to day we set out 1200 cabbage plants
Friday the 2May 1856 Commenced Replanting our corn it has been rather dry for the best planting but the first we planted has come up very well Rained a good shower in the eveing
Tuesday & Wednesday the 7 & 8th May 1856 Rained a good season set 1200 cabbage plants
Monday the 12 May 1856 Commenced plowing the corn the first time and planting peas in the middle of each row. fine growing weather but the grass is so short we have to feed our cows yet [?] [?] Straw Berrys in the garden uesterday but not many
13th May 1856 The Black Cow Had a heifer Calf got by Mr Cutterells Bull from Dr Nealts Devon stock. the calf is a verry dark red one white head leg and a small white Spot on top of the head and looks like it might make a fine Cow The mother of the calf is the best milker we have ever had
Saturday the 17 May 1856 Finished breaking middles all but a small peace north of the old barn
Monday the 19th May Rained yesterday a good season too wet to plan to day set out 500 cabbage plants
Tuesday 20 May 1856 Commenced Crop planing our corn to day it is verry grassy but looks well quite warm
21 May 1856 Yesterday John Lunn speyed 15 pigs and castrated 9 Bull calves and one Buck Goat They are doing well today
I planted to day in the yard around the House 9 Cork Oak Acorns from the South of France Sent to Col S Taylor from the patent office and he give them to (They did not come up GWJ 1857)

Thursday the 5th June 1856 Commenced plowing our Corn the 3rd time plowed the orchard & stoped it is too dry to plow had no rain since the 19th May Our corn is Small & not thined yet We have been Healling Rock off of the Born field for the last 5 days & putting them in a gully
