Tuesday the 14th Octr 1856 Rained all day North East Storm quite cool

Wednesday the 15 Octr 1856 Still cloudy & rainey put up 40 hogs to fatten to day they are small but thrifty looking & I think will average 150 [?]

Saturday the 18th Oct 1856 Been raining since Tuesday morning nearly all the time until last night it cleared away & there is Frost this morning but not heavy enough to kill any thing but tender vegetation

I bought one third in a fish trap at Sheeks mill at a sale of George Macks property and this was the first time we got any fish from it we got about 1/2 Bu of Succors & eels I paid $31.25 for it Levin Ward & Geo Sheek owns the other Two Thirds

Tuesday the 21 Oct 1856 pulled & halled corn & shucked it

Saturday the 20th Octr 1856 Finished Sowing wheat north of the corn crib except one Acre in the corner. I am going to have a [premum?] Lot on it

Monday the 27 Octr 1856 Rained this morning but stoped before night & cleared away Shucked corn

Thursday the 30th October 1856 The Farmington Agricultural Fair was held here to day there was four or five Hundred persons present and a fair showing of Horsses Hogs & Cattle and a great variety of other things I got a premium for the best Short horn Bull The best half blood calf & the 2 Best sow & pigs I also took the Largest Turnips Sweet potatoes and cabbage that was [exibeted?] & there was a great variety of such things shown

Page Status Needs Review

Saturday the Saturday the 1st November 1856 Sowed one Acre of Wheat in the corner of the field north of corn crib for a premium at our next years fair The land was manured Broadcast & planted in corn last Springs in Septr we cut the corn off & halled the Stalks up for cow feed and this week we have put 42 wagon Loads of Barn yarn manure on it one half halled with a 4 horse wagon & one half with a 2 horse wagon we then turned it under with a Turn plow about 6 in deep & run a subsoil plow after the Turn plow about 4 or 5 in deep we then harrowed it marked it off & sowed 1 1/4 Bu [Purple Strain?] wheat and 312 lbs guano on it we then plowed it in with the Scuters & harrowed again The Guano cost $11. and I suppose the manure was worth $20 and Halling & spreading on was worth $7.00 plowing Harrowing & seed say $4. Making the cost $42. On the Acre I expect to make 50 Bu wheat and have a rich acre as lomg as I live we Shall see

It was sowed one month too late but I did not expect to sow a premium Acre until a few days before I did it I know it dont pay

There was a killing [letters 2-3x larger]Frost[returned to normal handwriting] this morning the first time that all of vegetation has been killed this fall ground frose & some Ice

Monday the 3rd November 1856 Rained all day done nothing out doors

Tuesday the 4th November 1856 Rained all Last night & still raining verry hard this morning the ground thoroughly Soaked This is the day of the Preseidential Election Filmore & Donelson is the American & Buckhannan & Breckenridge the Democratic & at the north Freemont & Dayton the Freesoil candidates

Friday the 7th Novr 1856 pulled & hawled corn all day

Saturday 8th Novr 1856 Rained all last night too wet to haul corn We went to Jimtown & made fence around the Jarvis land for pasture

Monday the 10th Novr 1856 Pulled & halled corn all day finished Big field south east of House

Tuesday the 11th Novr 1856 Dug our Sweet Potatoes We had about 30 Bu sent 12 Bu to [?] Perrys for him to keep for us he charges half for keeping The first planting of Sweet potatoes was good but the last planting was not worth digging Those set out the 9 June done well but those set out the 2nd July worthless

Wednesday the 12 Novr 1856 Finished putting away our cabbage we have agreat many Say 2000 & the most of them fine large heads we made Two barrels of Crout out of them some 6 weeks ago We put up in three Kettles about 60 Bu of verry Large Turnips never had finer or better turnips

Thursday the 13th Novr 1856 Finished Haulling in our corn & then went to shucking corn

Saturday the 15th Novr 1856 Finished [in much larger 3x handwriting]Shucking our corn [end of large handwriting] & put up the Shucks all nice We make this year less than half a crop of corn I suppose we have made about 900 Bu while the Ground we had planted with a good season would of made nearly 2000 Bu Clear & cold in the moring

Monday the 17th Novr 1856. Thrashed 47 1/2 Bu Rye in the Cassel Barn

Tuesday the 18th Novr 1856 Halled the Rye & Straw & Some Oats from the Cassel Barn quite cool

Wednesday the 19th Novr 1856 Sowed Rye in the old Roberts orchard with 4 plows

Tuesday the 2nd Dec 1856 been raining about half the time for the last three weeks we have been fencing at James town for the last 10 days when it was not raining we are nearly done fencing in about 120 Acres in a a pasture for sheep & Dry cattle Rained Hard to day

Tuesday the 16 Dec 1856 Ki;;ed 21 hogs that weighed 3384 [tie?] been up 2 months not verry fat Rains about Twice a week

Saturday the 20th Dec 1856 Rained & sleeted all day quite cold

Tuesday the 23rd Dec 1856 Killed 19 hogs weighing 2032 lbs making in all 5416 lbs of pork killed this year verry cold this morning Ther at 6 Deg above zero verry cold all day cold cold cold to night at sunset Ther at 18 Deg

Wednesday the 24 Dec 1856 Commenced Halling Ice 3 in Thick halled 12 Loads

Thursday 25 the Dec 1856 Hired negroes to hall Ice to day at 16 cts Loaded [?] 7 Loads Dull Times - no Christmas frolics

Friday 26 Dec 1856 Halled Ice with 2 wagons filled the house 2/3 full & the Ice got to Soft

Wednesday the 31st Dec 1856 Snowed Two inches Deep at night & stoped Ther 30

Tuesday the 6 Jany 1857 Halled 9 Loads of Ice from the mill pond 2 to 2 1/2 in thick not verry cold [Here?] This morning 23 Some Snow on the ground that fell a week ago

Wednesday the 7th January 1857 Halled 9 Loads of Ice filled our house full it took 51 waggon Loads most of them 4 horse Loads to fill it Ice 3 in thick to day not verry cold Her this morning at 23 deg & at [1?] Oclock to day 36 Sun shining nice

Sold 10 Bu Rye to day at $1 - Bu to Giles Mumford of Mocksville

Wednesday the 14 Jany 1857 Frank Started to to Chapel Hill this morning he has been there three Sessions and will graduate in 3 more Negro Georg gone to move John Potts business this year I give him $140 - and find him a house & fire wood he will set in to work in a few days quite cold for the Last 6 Weeks Ground froze hard

Saturday the 17th January 1857 Bought a Negro boy (Jerry) of Joseph Conrad for $1000- Big snow storm at night

Minday the 19th Jany 1857 Commenced Snowing Saturday night & Snowed & Blowed all day yesterday the coldet Snow Storm I ever saw Ther at 13 at 2 Oclock & 7 at night of Sunday This morning the Ter at 5 above zero

My new hand Potts set in to work to day The Snow is about 12 in Deep on an average Some places being 3 or 4 ft Deep in the Drifts Cleared of & the wind still Blowing
