Gabriel F. Tucker, Jr., Assistant Professor of Pharmacology, School of Medicine, resigned as of June 30, 1953, to enter private practice.
Cecil G. Sheps, Director of Program Planning, Division of Health Affairs, resigned as of June 30, 1953, to accept appointment as Executive Director of Beth Israel Hospital in Boston.
Thomis J. Lassiter, Associate Professor, School of Journalism, resigned as of June 30, to return to private newspaper work.
John W. Harriman, Wachovia Professor of BAnking, School of Business Administration, resigned before reporting for duty, because of personal reasons.
Ivan R. Hershner, Jr., Assistant PRofessor on Military Leave from the Department of Mathematics, resigned as of September 1, to accept an appointment as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Mathematics at the University of Vermont.
Keneth R. Davis, Assistant Professor, School of Business Administration, resigned as of September 1, 1953, to accept appointment to faculty of Dartmouth College.
Retirement
John B. Woosley, Kenan Professor of Finance, School of Business Administration, ahs requested retirement as of August 31, 1953, because of ill health. Heh as been a member of this faculty since 1920.
Deaths
William Chambers Coker, Kenan Research Professor of Botany, Emeritus, died June 27, 1953.
Edgar Wallace Knight, Kenan Professor of Education, died August 7, 1953.
Chancellor House also presented additional matters as follows.
1. A request for permission to reemploy, in the Library, Miss Nelli Roberson (retired) on an emergency year to year basis, for the next year or two, for the reason that a suitable person for her replacement has not been found. The Library is in great need of Miss Roberson's services, and the matter has been cleared with the Retirement System.
Mr. Umstead moved that authority be given to reemploy Miss Roberson as recommended by Chancellor House. The motion was seconded and carried.
2. A recommendation that Dr. Oscar Coffin be permitted to retire as Dean of the School of Journalism and continue as Professor in the School for a few more years.
On Motion of Dr. Poe, seconded by Mrs. Tomlinson, the recommendation for the retirement of Dr. Coffin as Dean of the School of Journalism and for his continuation as Professor in the School of Journalism, was unanimously approved.
3. In connection with the above recommendation, Chancellor House requrested authority to conclude negotiations with Dr. Norvel Luxon who is at present Assistant to the President of Ohio State and who is quite a power in the field of Journalism
