The Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees of the University of North Carolina met in the office of the Governor at 11:00 A.M., on monday, January 25, 1954, Governor Umstead presiding; Arch T. Allen, Secretary. The following were present, to-wit: Mr. John W. Clark, Mr. John W. Umstead, Mr. W. Frank Taylor, Mrs. May L. Tomlinson, Mrs. Virginia T. Lathrop, Major L. P. McLendon, Mr. T. J. Pearsall, Mr. A. H. Harris, Dr. Clarence Poe and Mr. Victor S. Bryant Members; President Gray, Vice President and Controller Carmichael, Provost Purks, Chancellors House, Bostian and Graham.
The reading of the minutes was dispensed wtih, copies having been mailed to all members.
CHANCELLORS' REPORTS
Unviersity at Chapel Hill
President Gray was recognized and he called on Chancellor House who presented the following recommendations for the University at Chapel Hill:
Appointments:
1. Dwight M. Bissell, as Professor of Public Health Administration, School of Public Health, with tenure for five years, at an annual salary of $11,500 beginning May 1, 1954. Born June 25, 1903, Fresno, California; married, four children. A. B. Fresno State College, 1926; M. A., 1931 and M. D., 1936, Stanford University; M.P.H., 1939, University of California.
Experience: District Superintendent and Principal of High Schools in California 1926-32; private practice, Pittsburg, California, 1936-38; Health Officer, various California communities, 1938-42; Professor (part-time) in Public Health Administration, San Jose State College, 1942 --.
2. Christopher Theodore Bever, as Associate Professor of Psychiatry, School of Medicine, at an annual salary of $8,500 beginning January 1, 1954. Born March 12, 1919, Munich, Germany; married; two children. B. A. (cum laude), 1940 and M. D., 1943, Harvard.
Experience: Clinical Instructor in Psychiatry, Georgetown University, 1949-51.
3. Mary Vida Cheek, as Assistant Professor, School of Nursing and Director of Nursing Service for the Hospital, at an annual salary of $6,888 beginning December 1, 1953. Born in Durham, North Carolina, February 26, 1902, single. B.S. Nursing Education, University of Virginia, 1935; M. N., University of Washington, 1948.
Experience: Supervisor, North Carolina Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem, 1929-31; Supervisor and Instructor, Winchester (Va.) Memorial Hospital, 1931-33; Instructor, then Director of Nursing Service and School of Nursing, Memorial Hospital of South Bend (Ind.), 1935-47; Director of Nursing Service and School of Nursing, The Queen's Hospital, Honolulu, T.H., 1949 --.
