President Gray said that Dr. Graham was the unanimous choice of the Committees from the Woman's College Faculty, the Alumnae, the Trustees, and of William D. Carmichael, Jr., Controller and Acting President of the University, and he added his belief that "Edward Kidder Graham, Jr., fills in every respect the needs of the position."

Upon completion of this recommendation, Mrs. Cone moved that the appointment be approved, and speaking as a member of the Trustees' Committee for the selection of a Chancellor, Mrs. Cone said;

"Your Committee composed of Mrs. Parker, Mrs. Miller, Mr. Battle, Mr. Stevens, Mr. Taylor, Major McLendon and I, appointed to advise with the President of the University in the selection of a Chancellor, has traveled a long and rocky road. The resignation of President Graham complicated our taks. The President and the Chancellors must work in complete harmony for the best development of the University. Therefore, we felt it imperative that the incoming President should recommend to the Board his choice for this important position. Our Committee, therefore, voted for the first time about a month ago after carefully reviewing all possible candidates. The vote was unanimous that we recommend to President Gray, Edward Kidder Graham for his consideration. In casting this unanimous vote we were influenced by these factors: the personality and character of Dr. Graham; his wide and successful experience in administration at Cornell and at Washington University; the fact that he is a North Carolinian, bred and nurtured in the traditions and culture of our region; the fact that although his graduate experiences have fallen in other parts of the country, he has retained his love of and his enthusiasm for his native state; and his desire to return to his place of birth and use his wisdom and his energies in the building of a better state.

"Your Committee feels that the long road has come to a felicitus and most satisfactory end. We endorse President Gray's recommendation to this Board with the confident feeling that the Woman's College, under Dr. Graham as Chancellor, will continue its splendid development as part of the three-fold University.

"I ask that you will now allow other members of the Committee to express themselves as to our recommendation. "

Mrs. Albert Lathrop, member of the Alumnae Committee, seconded Mrs. Cone's motion that the appointment be approved, and stated that Dr. Graham was one
