The letters enumerate Ann's work in detail. She tells of
planting the vegetables, how many chicks each hen has
hatched, as well as the geese and ducks. She recites the
requests she has for butter and each flower when it blooms
as well as when it opens fully. The flowers that she takes
particular pleasure in are the jasmine, honeysuckle, red and
yellow roses. She tells of planting a row of Cherokee roses
on one side of the road from the house to the creek and
plans to match it on the other side as soon as she can raise
the slips. (The Cherokee rose was a favorite of plantation
people for use as fences. It had prolific white blooms with
yellow centers.) She reads the newspaper, The Examiner,
