Mr Cresson came often to our hotel and seemed to
enjoy Hayes’ company. He was what most persons would consider a bore
and probably felt grateful that we were civil to him. He considered him-
self a convert to the Jewish faith, which he had found necessary to do
before his native wife would marry him, and he told us that he attended
regularly the services of the synagogue. We went with him to see the inte-
rior and the proceedings one day, and found several devotees at their
prayers. These were loud and partly sung and indicated a good
deal of fervor and religious enthusiasm. The men were turbaned
and wore the flowing eastern robes, so that their appearance to us was
that they were Musulmen. The building within was divided into several
rooms, dark and ill-lighted, and exhibited no architectural adornment
outside.
